Have a Computer Question ? Read this first.

The guy that is running my CompTIA A+ training class set up an exhaustive website that has more computer information than any sane person should need. There is a TON of free stuff, and zero ads. I know I sound like a commercial, but his site is really worth checking out.

I can’t get rid of some piece of garbage, becausemy remove software control is now disabled-is there anything I can do?

Can you give a few more details?
What antimalware tools have you installed, currently?
Have you looked for similar problems earlier in this thread, there is an amazing amount of information accumulated there.

I have installed AVG (basic),it happend today-somehow this AVS antispyware software got on my system, I tries the windows button (to remove it), and it was disabled. What i would up doing was listing the AVS files one by one-but my display software/remove control still doesn’t work. I fear I’ll have to do a system recovery.

That’s not software on your computer. Many sites host ads that do exactly this; it makes you focus on the ad. This sucks, of course, but for the sites I really want to use (ie snopes.com) I put up with it.

There are quite a few other antimalware programs described in this thread but I’d suggest that you download and run Superantispyware
If that doesn’t shift it, or even if it does, try Avast.
Note that Avast will ask you to do a boot scan once it is installed but before it runs (you can do a bootscan later if you wish) I would recommend that you do it but with this reservation.
While the scan is being performed you must stay with the computer and it can take up to an hour. Keep moving the mouse around. If your computer decides to hibernate or go into some other power saving mode, it could completely trash your filesystem. I know this from bitter personal experience. It wasn’t too bad as it was a brand new Vista laptop so there was nothing on it but it needed Vista reinstalling. A situation best avoided. Apart from that Avast is superb.
You will be asked to register but it is no hassle and they will never bother you again for fourteen months and then only to re-register.

I’d also suggest that you install Spybot Search & Destroy During installation opt for using the Tea Timer which will help to prevent spyware writing itself into the registry - you have to give it permission.
Use the Immunize function and all the advanced tools. There is a warning of dire consequences if using the advanced tools inadvisedly but despite several attempts I have never succeeded in bringing my systems down with them.

See how you get on with that and report back if you haven’t succeeded in ridding yourself of the problem.

If you haven’t a firewall, Sygate is excellent, despite it having been bought by Symantec.
If you have Vista, Sygate is not compatible so try PC Tools Firewall Plus. It is a bit of a nag at first but it is all for your own good.

All the above are free.

Rookie question here:

If I have Windows Defender - and get all the Windows updates - is that enough for AV protection?

If not, what is recommended?

Current problem: I have three PCs. Two PCs are fine but one seems to have a virus. Windows Defender wouldn’t open, but I re-installed it and it’s doing a full scan right now. AOL opens but won’t work. IE opens but won’t work. I’m connecting now via Firefox.

Someone recommended Bitdefender but I can’t do their online scan since IE isn’t working. Also I can’t do MS online scan - I’m guessing that’s also because IE isn’t working. Any other online AV scans I could do via Firefox?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I wonder if someone could update Post #1? As I said above I’m a rookie at this, I have no idea what I’m doing. But it’s hard for me to act on advice that’s three years old in a field like computers. No doubt many of you could read the post and know immediately what parts are still up to date - maybe 100% of it - but those dopers wouldn’t need the post in the first place.

Yeah, every time I come in here I think that; it’s got to the point where I feel slightly sheepish about having my name on it. Obviously some of the advice still applies, but my systems (and those of my friends) have been stable and bug-free for so long that I don’t really have the current experience to usefully update my earlier post (nor do I really have the spare time).

So yeah - is there anyone out there who’d be willing to update it a bit?

How do you do this? On the screen, that is. I have a Dell Inspiron 4100. I have no idea what the screen is made of, nor what is safe to use to clean it. Any answers, please?

Only use the method recommended by the manufacturer. If you have lost your user guide, it is available on the Dell website.

My laptop screen (among many others) will be damaged by using ammonia based products (standard window cleaners). Others can be damaged by alcohol based products.

When in doubt, use only a tiny bit of water (half a squirt sprayed onto the cloth, never the screen). Use a lint free cloth, there are new microfiber cloths that are good.

Yes, you can find places online that will sell you “special” LCD screen cleaners. They don’t care whether or not they damage your screen as long as they get their $.

Thanks for the inof…
I need to know how to reinstall, or otherwise work on the drive for the mouse pointer. I have even gone to the Mouse Properties dialog box and clicked on the little box in Snap To, and still the pointer drifts to the lower left or upper right. It even does so in an uneven manner as if someone else were manipulating it!
Any help here? It’s a Dell Inspiron 4100 Laptop, a few years old.

Can anyone recommend a good spam filter to use with MS Outlook?

Can anyone answer the question I asked? I posted it because I wanted to be answered…

People don’t always read this thread, it being rather elderly and non-specific.

Doesn’t sound like a driver problem, to be honest - sounds more like your touch-pad or trackpoint has worn out. The trackpoint is the most likely culprit - those recalibrate themselves every so often (which is why when you go scrolling down a long document, you sometimes find the cursor moving upwards when you finally let got). If the recalibration is broken, I’m afraid you’re probably stuffed.

You could try disabling the trackpoint, perhaps (although I’m not sure how to go about doing so - presumably it’s possible somewhere in the Windows device manager); that should tell you whether it’s at fault or not. If so, a blast of compressed air might dislodge any crap that’s affecting it. Otherwise, I don’t have any bright ideas short of sending it to Dell, and I’m not sure that’s a bright idea at all. At 6 years old (well, that’s when the 4100 came out anyway) it’s one elderly laptop.

This thread is not for asking questions. If you have a problem, open a new thread in GQ.

Is any avg antivirus software’s new version is available.

It rather depends on which version you have.
This is the latest AVG free and subscribed.

I am trying to help my brother hook up his new PC to is TV system. He has a Bose receiver with many jack options. The PC appears to have a Digital Audio out Jack with an RCA style jack. I tried a standard RCA cable out of this jack to the Bose Receiver’s Digital Audio In for Cab-Sat (Cable - Satellite), we got no sound out. Does Digital Audio require a special cable? I have never dealt with Digital audio before.

The Computer is an HP with Vista Media loaded. I am going to send him home with a pair of cheap PC speakers to test the basic audio and ensure HP didn’t send the PC out badly loaded.
