Have links to YouTube been disabled?

^^^ but yes I swiped that one from Susan’s post and when I tried pasting one I had acquired from YouTube (again the “youtu.be” variety) nope it doesn’t work.

So I guess we need to hire Susan to post these for us??

Chrome 111.0.5563.147
It won’t embed Susan’s post

I was able to embed a YouTube video to the annoying commercials thread yesterday, which I wasn’t able to do the day before. Haven’t tried editing it, but I don’t want to now for fear of screwing it up.

Non-Youtube video link

don’t think it counts, it isn’t a “play directly within your dope post” kind of link.

Still not working for me when posting regular YouTube links (with either Firefox or Chrome). Get the same error – “An error occurred: Sorry, you can’t embed media items in a post.”

Trying with @susan’s “youtu.be” URL:

Well that worked, and I can edit the post, too.

Hmmm… a workaround! The difference between regular YouTube URLs and youtu.be URLs, neither of which work, is that @susan’s youtu.be URL has “?list=RD4m48GqaOz90” appended to it. I have no idea what it does, but appending that arbitrary string seems to allow the video to post.

Apparently the “?list=” suffix is a reference to a playlist, so it’s not really a useful workaround – it does allow you to post a video, but then other videos in the playlist will play after it, which is kind of messed-up and not what you want. Strange that this works around the posting bug, though.

Oops – looks like by posting the above videos with the “?list=” qualifier, I inadvertently added them to the front of @susan’s public playlist! Sorry about that! Other folks, please don’t use this as a workaround. It’s possible to create your own public playlist, but it’s a pain.

That’s odd.
I copied the video id into susan’s format :-
https://youtu.be/FOrIPVBLsRQ/
It appears to work with the forward slash at the end, but not without.
(but i couldn’t edit the post - hence this one !)

But now i can’t re-create it !!
WTF is going on !

Clearly there is a bug. Which means we’re (probably) not going to find a simple workaround by trial and error. The only generalization we can reliably make is that it almost always doesn’t work for inscrutable reasons.

My first try embedding a Youtub video since this thread started. It worked normally.

testing

What did you just do? Your post says “1 reply”, but it’s the last post in the thread. If I click on the reply, it shows me another post (also a broken video) from you.
ETA, and there’s no reply button on your reply to your post.

ETA2…I think your reply is…a duplicate post of what it’s reply to. Like, it’s the same actual post. That can’t be right can it?

Okay, appending ?feature=share at the end of the url works. Apparently that’s now automatically added when one clicks the Share button.

What happens if I highlight and quote something from the reply?

And now direct embedding of a photo didn’t work normally.

To embed YT videos :-

  1. Right click video on YT and select “copy video url.”
(this is not the same url as you see in your browser’s address bar !?)
  2. Paste link back here
  3. add “/” to the end.

I tried to find a SDMB relevant YT video … and found that ^ !!
It’s … interesting.
