Even in America, films like Restrepo were winning awards by 2010, rather late in the game but note that it was over 10 years ago.
English as a lingua franca springs to mind, and that’s without the fact that most first world countries outside Europe (including the US) wouldn’t have existed without colonialism in the first place…
The entire military and foreign policy leadership of 4 administrations, as well as a huge portion of the pundit class, was saying this for most of two decades. I’m sure many wise people were skeptical, but this was the position of the institutions of America for the last ~20 years.
Well, I’m so glad that more than a century of dealing with the bloody aftermath of colonialism has brought us so much!

Assuming you’re talking about the US, the country exists because English and French and Spanish colonialists decided they wanted to, well, colonise the place. The whole “War of Independence” thing doesn’t change that.
That was part of the “English as a lingua franca” thing, but yes. People really underestimate the power of a shared language and the international communication opportunities it facilitates. 
These things always end up being a “Well, what have the Romans ever done for us?” situation, unless you’re referring to The Congo Free State which even I think was unequivocally and appallingly bad in pretty much every way.

The communist regime that used to run Afghanistan had a much better record on women’s rights than the religious regimes have. But back when the communists were running Afghanistan, we were supporting the religious rebels in their attempts to overthrow the communists.
News reports that Afghans clung to departing U.S. warplane on runway and fell to their deaths as it took off.
It’s hardly a thing you want the rest of the world to know!
