Have you benefited from the pandemic?

I work for a company that supports online businesses. With the shift to e-commerce during the pandemic, my stock options have almost quadrupled.

And I’ve lost 45 pounds.

From Baltimore to Charleston, SC, Port Canaveral, FL, Nassau, Bahamas, and Royal Caribbean’s private resort in the Bahamas before returning to Baltimore. And, honestly, I doubt that we’ll even get off the ship. We’ve done this cruise once before and we’re not really beach people, so the whole Caribbean beach thing has no appeal. Plus we lived in Florida for 18 years, so that stop is no big deal. We’re just looking forward to getting away for a bit and letting someone feed us and clean up after us.

Definitely.

I’ve saved thousands of dollars by not having to commute to NYC, wear business clothes, buy lunch out. My stress levels are way down since I don’t have to commute and I get up when I want. I love having my kids at home and two of them moved back (one is very sociable and has had a tougher time, although he’s doing fine now, and the other one loved not having to socialize).

The beginning was pretty stressful, but by June, 2020, I was in the routine of working from home and things really relaxed for me.

Birdwatching is IMHO a good reason to disembark. It sounds relaxing to get away. I haven’t cruised out of Baltimore, which would certainly be convenient when I visit mid-Atlantic friends.

We live less than 2 hours south of the terminal in Baltimore, and my sister lives 10 minutes away - I can leave my car at her house and she drops us off. Very convenient.

We were supposed to travel to China in April of 2020, and I didn’t want to go, so right away the pandemic was a boon to me. It was also good for me in that I didn’t have to arrange any more catered events or travel for other people at work. Work ramped up big time in other ways, but those particular pains in the ass went away. (Woe is me, they’re now making a comeback). I continued to show up to the office, but fewer co-workers were there in person, which was nice. At times, I even enjoy the anonymity of mask-wearing.

My husband no longer commutes to an office - so that’s a substantial savings in time and money for our household (the car we bought a year ago still has < 8,000 miles on it).

I was mostly teleworking even before the pandemic, and since then, I’ve been able to be 100% telework through three project changes - three different teams, of whom I’ve never seen one person face to face. The latest one is based in another city. They would not have even hired me on if not for the pandemic: there was a no-telework policy, and then they finally changed the position description to read something like “telework to be discussed” or something like that.

When they interviewed me, I asked right up front “Let’s say things settle down, and they start allowing in-person work: what happens to me then?” and the interviewer said “well, let me just say: I have a team of 25 people. We have at most 10 desks.”.

Since I’m enjoying the work, and it’s a long-term project, and I’ve had 3 changes in just over a year, I’m hoping that pans out!

Wow. Congrats!

For me, I was already at home full time, but now my husband isn’t commuting  and not driving the kids to school was a huge time saver. We’re going to sell one of our cars because we just don’t need 2 cars at this point. All in all, less stress and money saved.
