Tell. I was on CBS.
I seem to be in the right place at the right time, so I’ve been on the local news a few times.
The one time I was involved in a truly newsworthy situation, a local reporter called my business wanting to do an interview. I explained that I was recently divorced, had shared custody of my kids, and had to pick them up at 4 pm. So, as long as he arrived in time for me to get them, all was cool.
An employee called my cell phone at 4:45. The news van had just arrived and the reporter was throwing a fit. I reminded him of our previous conversation. He just kept screaming about how important it was that I get right back there for an interview. I explained that my kids were more important to me, and hung up on him.
About 18 years ago I was on the local news. They were out at the library catching people as they went in to discuss the heat. What could I say? “Yeah it’s hot”. I didn’t even see it or know about it airing until my brother called that night.
I remember it mostly because I was so embarrassed. I’m already shy enough as it is without a camera in front of me.
Our local NBC affiliate has a morning talk show that features dogs for adoption. I have gone on three times with dogs. I haven’t spoken, they have a local DJ that sponsors the segment and talks about the dogs, but I have been filmed with the dogs, the DJ and the hosts.
Our local Fox affiliate did an expose on puppy mills. It involved going to a puppy mill and buying a dog while filming the conditions of the place. After the dog was bought (and treated by a vet at the cost of the station), they gave the dog to our rescue for adoption. I was a Board member of the rescue at the time of the report and we took the dog into the Studio for a follow-up and to report that she was available for adoption. They did interview me about our rescue and about how to adopt the dog.
Some of my dances were on TV back in the 90s. And not too long ago I had a brief (tiny) segment on “Office workers who don’t go out to lunch”. I go out almost every day, for fresh air or whatever.
I guess kind of, except the photofit looked nothing like me.
J/k
I have been on TV several times at sporting events. Once while watching a home run ball land nearby at a KC Royals game and probably 10+ times at LSU basketball games. The only time I have been singled out for something on TV was my senior year in high school. Most of the north Louisiana stations had me on the news one night after I kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime against a powerhouse football team in the first round of the state playoffs. There was footage of me kicking the field goal, being carried around the field, and participating in a short, not very eloquent interview. There was a lot of adrenaline and I was very excited, most of it was a blur except the random yelling at the end. Oh well.
I suppose I should have elaborated. I was working as a designer at a tech company that was releasing a high profile new product that was generating some national buzz. I wasn’t interviewed, but appeared in some B-roll with NBC news reporter voiceover.
Hey, me too!
I’ve been on TV a zillion times, but other than my It’s Academic appearances, they were all accidents. Nobody’s ever featured me or anything.
I was on Showtime (is that still on?) about 25 years ago. There was a camera crew filming man-on-the-street bits for a show called “Jokes”. They showed up at The Grand National Irisf fair that I was working at. I was in full plate armor and they thought i would look interesting to have knight tell a joke. I was trying be a comedian at the time so I thought this would be a cakewalk. What I failed to realize at the time was that 5 or 6 Guiness’s and 3 or 4 shots of Irish whiskey had made me staggeringly drunk. I stammered and fumbled my way through the joke, forgetting parts of it and interupting myself in the middle.
When we saw it later in the month it was good television.
Ha ha!
I was on Academic Challenge in the Cleveland area two years in the mid-'70’s. My school won both times.
I might have seen you on Polka Varieties!
I’ve been on twice. I was interviewed on TV about my article on The Physics of Karate back in 1979. I still have a copy of the videotape.
Then, of course, I was on Clash of the Gods: Medusa two years ago. I have the DVD. In fact, several copies of the DVD.
One of my life’s greatest moments was when my cousin’s daughter turned on the TV and suddenly, there I was. “Is that cousin [CaLmeacham]?” she asked. My only regret was that I wasn’t there to see it. My cousin had terminal cancer, and the incident brought a smile to her lips.
At this rate, I’ll get on TV again – assuming it’s still around – in 2039.
I was in a UK show called Open to Question - kind of a youth programming thing with audience questioning of public figures. It was mainly for secondary school kids, but they sprinkled in a few first year uni people to keep the conversation going. I got into somewhat of an argument on air with John Prescott.
Yep, I saw you too, Cal!
My husband and I went on a trip to California a year or so ago and stopped for lunch at a restaurant. We were the only ones in there at the time, and occupied ourselves by listening to all the activity going on in a curtained-off portion of the room.
Late that evening at the hotel we turned on the TV and saw the restaurant chef giving an interview. You could just see my husband eating lunch through a tiny crack in the curtained backdrop.
Once. We had a Cuban grad student who was accused of being a spy and summarily expelled. A TV news guy came around and interviewed me, wanting to know if I saw strange characters wandering around the halls. Well, no math dept lacks strange characters wandering around the halls. In fact, with my beard, I probably looked a bit strange to him too. So I said there were all types. So I had my 30 seconds of fame. I was going out of town that night, so I never did see the show (it was long before there were VCRs, or at least before I had one), but my wife did and she said it was a scream. What the student had allegedly done was act as a courrier between an actual spy and the Cuban consulate. He went back to Cuba and has apparently had a long career as a math professor there.
Later the RCMP interviewed and I was left with the impression that the RCMP guy was an idiot.
The first time I made I on the “small screen” was when I was 23. A grocery store in Jacksonville, Fl was giving away free Jaguars tickets to the first 200 people in line. The local news was on hand and interviewed me. About a year later I answered an ad for a car commercial audition. I thought it would be a traditional, cheesy car commercial, but they asked participants to recite one word; SoJax, which is he name of the dealership. They ended up using 10 people’s rendition of that word and I made the cut. The only other time I tasted stardom was a few year ago. I was asked to present the Teacher of The Year award for Pinellas county in Florida. I spoke in front of a few thousand people and the ceremony was shown several times on public access television.
I’ve been on Jeopardy (in 1974). I’ve been interviewed on a couple nature programs that I think have appeared in the US. I’ve also done a number of interviews that have appeared on local Panamanian TV.
A couple of times. I’ve done home brewing demos and lessons for the local PBS station, for example. The occasional interview on some subject I was supposed to know something about, like high school speech and debate.
I got onto the local Boston coverage of the Boston Marathon a few times. A couple of times, I could be seen for about a minute approaching the finish line. I put those two on youtube for my friends to see. One of those times, I was passed by a Japanese woman who was probably not even 4 foot 10. At 5 foot 11, I towered over her, as did most of the guys around us.
