Have you ever gotten something in the exact opposite of the way you wanted it?

Well, here’s the deal. I have been doing primarily non-fiction writing for a while now. That’s how I got my little taste of fame and fortune(that’s mostly a JOKE, especially the part about the fortune.) I had two publishing houses come thisclose to taking books of mine, only to reject them. I got thoroughly disgusted with writing fiction. In the past three weeks, however, my wish to have that passion and drive for fiction writing again has come true… but in the exact opposite of the way I thought it ever would.
Completely by accident, I ended up writing fan fiction (it all began when I stumbled on a page without any conscious plan.) I never even imagined I’d be doing this and it feels like some weird kind of clandestine drug habit. My friends either look at me blankly when I talk about it, or heap coals of scorn on my head. But in the past THREE WEEKS, I’ve written over 70,000 words. (I should explain that I don’t write short fiction, you see.) The entire thing is going to end up being at least as long as any of the books it was based on; I’ve never seen fan fiction this length (I’m sure it exists, I just haven’t seen it.) So my questions are two:
1.) Have I flipped out? Gone around the bend? Lost my religion?
and
2.) Has this happened to anyone else? Not just the fan fiction thing, but getting something you always wanted, only in the exact opposite of the way you wanted it?
All advice appreciated!

I’m confused.

You write non-fiction for fame and fortune but no one has published your books?

Why are you so excited about writing fan fiction? Because you’re writing fiction or is someone publishing it? I assume that’s the goal, right?

What the heck is “fan fiction” and how do you start writing is accidentally?

You’d think a professional writer would be a bit clearer with their writing. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, when I was a kid, I wanted my parents to stop fighting, and they did…

By getting divorced.

Go figure.

Doing everything opposite worked for George Costanza.

Sorry, that was unclear. My non-fiction writing has been articles, not books, and the fortune part WAS a joke. The “fame” part… well, it originated with a series of articles that were published in sources like Alternet. They were based on the work I did over the past year and a half in Tennessee about voter disenfranchisement in this state. I did a lot of traveling and speaking on the basis of them, and stirred up a lot of reactions. These ranged from support to, well, horrible personal insults and death threats (really.)
Fan fiction is writing based on characters and usually a setting that someone else already created. If someone sits down and writes their own version of what happened during the years between the end of the original Star Trek and the beginning of TNG, for instance, that’s fan fiction. My SO always heaped scorn upon it. Some of it does deserve to be taken out and slapped.

i got rid of an asshole boss and got a better job…because i was fired!

gatopescado: Me too. For 2 months I was really in bad shape. But, lo and behold, I got a better job. *some of you may remember this - Insurance or Starbucks *

Do you enjoy writing fan fiction? If so, go for it! Who cares what anyone else says.

Especially your no-good SO
