Have you ever hallucinated? (non-recreationally) Did it scare you?

I’ve had fever and sleep deprivation hallucinations. I also frequently experience a hypnic jerk, usually the feeling I get is like I tripped going downstairs.

The first, I was in the hospital with a staph infection in my hip joint, and a serious fever–I recall watch the TV in the room do a kaleidoscope thing, where there were about eight of them moving around and through each other.

The second was from work, I know I had a shower around the 48 hour mark, and I think it was about a day and half later, I was driving home, and I saw little demons playing in traffic. I knew that demons weren’t real, so all I could do was hope that they weren’t covering some kid running onto the highway. One of the stupidest things I’ve done, I can’t figure out why driving home seemed more reasonable than pulling over and calling my wife.

I had visual hallucinations when I had chickenpox (or mumps, I don’t remember, I was very young). Didn’t scare me at all, but then, I was way too sick to do anything anyway.

I also have the occasional hypnopompic auditory hallucinations, which can be disorienting but not really scary.

Especially when I was younger, I’ve sometimes heard someone calling my name, as though to get my attention–usually a voice I recognize. But when I look around, the person isn’t there. (Usually happens in an area with other people–e.g., hearing my principal call my name in the hallway of my gradeschool.)

My freshman(?) year of high school, my choir was performing a concert. As we processed in, I started to feel very hot. By the time we were on the risers, I had to stop singing and just focus on breathing, because I felt like I was about to pass out. Around that time, everything started shifting colors–first everything went kind of green, then kind of orange. After I got in the car for Mom to take me home, I realized that I hadn’t had anything to eat for at least a day, maybe two (and this was back in my “hollow leg” phase). Scarfed down a big sub sandwich on the way home and immediately felt much better.

As far as hypnogogic hallucinations go, I’ll sometimes “see” bugs (often larger than life and/or radiating day-glo colors) on or near me (e.g., on the ceiling above me). I usually freak out, which then wakes me up enough to realize that it’s too dark for me to actually see anything.

You must have just loved Ahn’Qiraj.

When I was about 14 I ran a high fever. I had sat up in bed and had a brief hallucination - my room turned into a city street, and I started to fall and I knew I was going to smash my head on a parking meter that was there.

When my head hit the pillow it “snapped me out of it” and I realized where I was. Scared the crap out of me, but never it happened again.

Mine were hordes of bees, and they were coming to sting me, and I frantically waved them away. At the time, I was taking a final exam in an air-conditioned and probably insect-free building on a college campus. Wonder what my classmates thought.

It was a the end of a semester during which I had developed a progressively more awful sleeping disorder, and I was averaging about 1 1/2 hrs. of sleep a day at the end of it. I mentioned the bees to my older brother, who was pretty concerned and bullied me into a doctor’s visit. Thank God.

ETA: At the time, it didn’t scare me that much. When I realized it was a hallucination, I was primarily just relieved I wasn’t going to get stung. In retrospect, it scares the crap out of me. I was really messed up.

I’m actually sad that none of my mounts work outside of AQ40. :frowning:
