I’m 46. I’m somewhat familiar with Jones and his music, almost undoubtedly and entirely due to listening to the Doctor Demento show when I was younger.
I think “Laura” (Spike Jones And His City Slickers - Laura - YouTube) is his magnum opus–it shows the Slickers could also be a damn good straight band when they wanted to. Then of course all hell breaks loose.
Not only do I know of and like Spike Jones, butI also own (I think) everything he ever recorded.
I’m familiar with him, and, like kenobi, it’s mostly due to Dr. Demento.
Yep, got him on my iPod too.
As performed by Doodles Weaver, brother of former NBC head Pat Weaver and uncle of Sigourney.
As a child, I had the misfortune to shed my baby front teeth in mid-December. As you can imagine, family and friends took turns regaling me with, “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth”.
My next encounter with Spike Jones and his City Slickers was during my college years, when I listened to Dr. Demento’s show.
Genius, pure maniacal genius, and damn good musicians.
I have listened to classical, big band, swing, jazz and blues all my life. I love Spike Jones and His city Slickers.
Spike Jones is what happens when a bunch of session musicians get bored
Oddly enough, Never Hit Your Grandmaw With a Shovel is playing right now [on my playlist right after Noel Coward’s Could You Oblige Us With a Bren Gun. [Though my favorite is PalYatChee]
I still don’t know if we’re talking about Spike Jonze here or not.
My introduction to Spike Jones - courtesy of some guy (long ago) whose name escapes me - You Always Hurt The One You Love

No. Totally different guy.
Poll is closed, but we own an 8-disc Spike Jones compilation and a couple of extra CDs, plus DVDs. Great driving music.
