The detailer isn’t give us the choices we’d hoped for, one of our options may be Guam, just don’t know anything about it.
Okay I did google it but I just get the touristy info. I want to know what it’s like from someone who’s been there. Or is there.
Travel is not the problem, Hubby will be back on a boat and he worries that I will be bored and have nothing to do, my protestations that I will be fine wherever we go are being heeded with skepticism.
Guam is a little place, 30 miles from end to end and less than 12 miles across at it’s widest. Never more than 15 miles from the ocean. average year round temp. 85 degrees. Anybody want to move?
A bunch of us could tell you plenty about Hawaii. I moved away, but I was born there and lived there for 25 years.
There’s stuff to do in Hawaii, but whether you’ll enjoy yourself there really depends on what you like to do. Shopping? Plenty of shopping. Going to the beach or other outdoors activities? No problem. There’s not much of a night life, though, and being a half ocean away, Hawaii doesn’t get a lot of big stuff, like movie premieres or big-name concerts or performances. There aren’t any major professional sports teams based in Hawaii, and the arts scene is pretty small. It’s not a boring place, but compared to the mainland US, it is limited. I think the same applies to Guam.
What kinds of activities do you enjoy? And what kinds of stores/shops would you rather not live without?
There is a lot I’ll give up not to have to deal with cold weather. But good food/restaurants and bookstores are things I CANNOT live without.
We still have a year to figure out where we’re going. Other options involved cold winters but access to large cities and all they have to offer. Hubby says it’s my decision since he’ll be gone a bit of the time. I hate making decisions.
My husband lived on Guam for eleven years, until in '93 he was (forcibly) transferred to Japan. He’d be happy to answer any questions you have. He LOVED it, I hasten to add! I think my email address is listed; drop me a note and I’ll put you in touch with him directly. If not, yell on the board here and we’ll figure something out. I don’t want to post his e-address publicly, obviously.
There are a few Barnes & Nobles and Borderses in Hawaii, along with Waldenbooks. But it doesn’t have as big a bookstore and coffee shop scene like how, say, Seattle does. (Well, duh! :D) You’ll also have to travel a few miles to get to them. Major shopping centers have bookstores, sure, but I think there are only about a half dozen B&Ns/Borderses and a dozen Waldenbookses on the island of Oahu.
Finding good food and restaurants won’t be a problem. I can just tell you everything I miss, and you’re good to go.
