I never used it, though I think it’s a clever description. I may introduce it into the household to amuse my kid. I’m all for amusing things that don’t cost me any money.
Back in college, they were also referred to as “Pizza Roaches.”
For anyone confused/disgusted… it isn’t a reference to the bugs.

I think we started using it after we had kids. You can probably guess why it emerged then.
Agreed. Knew immediately and now I will use. My son leaves a lot of pizza bones around. I miss having pets to give them to. (Dog, then pet rats)
When I was young, my family used the term ironically because we gave them to the dog.
I learned it a few years ago on the internet, but given how long it’s been in use, I don’t think that counts as “heard.”
I always eat the bones when I have pizza.
I first read it in a SDMB thread. Since I loves me some pizza bones, I use it a lot.
People that don’t eat crusts make me sad.

I think I also learned it on the SDMB and read it once or twice. I think it’s a pretty stupid expression and never use it.
I didn’t use it growing up, and hadn’t heard it until I started dating my SO, who doesn’t eat the pizza crusts (and gives them to our dog).

Have heard “pizza bones”, but for the first time maybe 3 or 4 years ago. I wonder if anyone was saying it in the 90s? 80s?

The main character Charlie mentions he called the crusts pizza bones as a child.
I remember that (read the book around age 14 maybe?) because I thought it was weird/funny. Never heard it before or since. We just always called it the crust.
New Englander here. I’ve heard it in person a few times, but it’s far from a common term.

Worked for Pizza Hut for three years in the late 70’s, and have eaten tons of pizza since then, and never heard the term until tonight.
I have heard of it some time in the past, I think only once, and no memory of when or where. It would never occur to me to use it, or even recall it if I didn’t see it mentioned here.
I had to ask for an explanation the first time I heard it. I found it strange that there could be uneaten crusts left.
I’ve heard it most of my life from people from various walks of life. Just normal slang.
