One of my parents.
After my cancer diagnosis I was on short-term disability for six months then long-term kicked in and I used that for two months. But then I got better and went back to work.
Were you ever on SSI, or was it private disability insurance, presumably through your job?
Yes, me, due to rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s and fibromyalgia.
My daughter too, due to autism, though she’s not on unemployment benefits due to her age and I hope that she will be able to work in some way when she’s older. She has talents that should help offset some of her problems.
Both are definitely deserved, no faking necessary. I’d be much better off able-bodied and able to work regularly because I do have skills and there is work in my area - work that I really enjoy, too. I mean, obviously I’d be better off able-bodied, but financially I would be too.
My brother in law qualified for the compassionate allowance program for about the last 15 months of his life.
Private, through my job. I can’t imagine I could have managed to get through the SSDI bureaucracy in the relatively short time I was unable to work.
A BIL is, for Huntington’s chorea.
