Have you read the novels of Frankenstein and Dracula?

ETA: I recommend the Norton editions of both (for Dracula, the Skal/Auerbach edition, not the Klinger). Leonard Wolf was fine for his time, but the Norton is more accurate. Several of Wolf’s annotations are mistaken. Research is a wonderful thing.

Because of this thread, I decided to read Dracula. It had its moments–my favorite was the ship arriving in England during the storm. Another one I thought was memorable was when Harker observes Dracula making his (Harker’s) bed. It’s important to Harker because it proves his suspicion that the count has no servants. I found it odd to picture a vampire making a bed. Did it have hospital corners?

If you’re having trouble getting into the novels as prose, try to track down illustrated versions; in particular, (although it is an abridged interpretation) “Dracula: A Symphony in Moonlight and Nightmares” by Jon Muth and especially the version of Frankenstein illustrated by Bernie Wrightson. The Wrightson version was the only way I could get into it, but I’m glad I did.
