Have you read the sequel to "101 Dalmatians"?

I remembered this thread when I saw a reference to Smith’s I Capture the Castle (in The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes). Several copies of her books, including The Starlight Barking, are available to borrow on the Internet Archive:

They go to Cruella DeVil’s house to kill her?! That cat is pretty hardcore. Reminds me of the original novel of The Wizard of Oz. It had a triple-digit body count.

I haven’t read the book but the synopsis of the plot made me think of David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars but with dogs. The two works aren’t directly alike but they do seem to share some key elements. (I wonder if Bowie read “The Starlight Barking” beforehand.)

Yup, read it as a child. It’s definitely weirder than the original, but I enjoyed it. (Um, I haven’t tried it again for many, many years. So I might think differently about it now!)
