So I bought a Pentax digivid camera. It makes *.mov files, which ar QuickTime files. So I have downloaded and installed the latest version of QuickTime MORE than once.
This is what I get when I open a .mov file from my camera (and then it just plays the audio track; no picture):
You may experience playing a video track in “[FILENAME].MOV” because the required compressor could not be found. Would you like to close the movie or continue?
This kept happening. So, I plunked $30 down for QuickTime Pro. I figured it would have ALL the “required compressors,” plus I wanted to do some editing, etc., and $30 seemed reasonable for that.
Guess what? Still getting that same error, the same no-picture audio track.
So I dug around at apple.com, in the QuickTime Help area. Turns out that in everybody else’s case, that message pops up in relation to some kinds of .AVI files; no help to be found for when it happens with .MOV files.
Did the camera come with any software? Did you install it? It’s possible - though unlikely - that the codec is somewhat proprietary and is included with the CD.
That’s the error I usually get with DiVx codecs, which are not available through Quicktime’s main site (but widely available elsewhere). I can’t imagine Pentax would compress the video in DiVx, though.
Pentax also requires Windows Media Player to be fully updated, and DirectX 8.0 to be installed. Are you up-to-date on those?
Are there any compression settings on the camera itself?
I’m sorry, man. That is very, very odd. You could try converting the file to AVI just to see if you can get something to display, but that would only be a temporary solution.
Just to nitpick, but Quicktime/.MOV is not a media format, like MPEGs or DV; it’s a “media container”, which can be used to hold different types of audio and video formats. Like the error message in the OP says, you still need the correct Quicktime codec plug-in to encode/decode whatever file format(s) you want.
