Hawaii Issued Zero Gun Permits in 2016?

Can this be true? Hawaii has famously strict gun laws. Minor media outlets are reporting no permits were issued in 2016. I can fund no reliable source.

What I did find was the local paper reporting on the 2014 figures. That year it seems a couple of thousands of people got permits.

Anyone know?

I believe it’s apples and oranges. The first reference (2016) is for concealed carry permits if I’m reading it correctly. The second seems more purchase permits. I know little about Hawaii in terms of detailed specifics but its basically been next to impossible there to get a CCP/CWP for ages.

Like never. Just flexed my Google-fu and found this. Look at page nine and you will see no permits have been issued since before 2000

Ah. This is the sort of minor distinction I usually pick up on. Thank you.

But how do they stop each other from gun massacres if they don’t have enough guns ?

Hawaii is in practice a no issue state. A few years ago there was a case Baker vs. Kealoha which was a sister case to Peruta vs. San Diego in the 9th circuit challenging Hawaii’s “may issue” policy for concealed weapons permits. Richards vs. Prieto was also a similar case in Yolo County in Sacramento, CA. On the day that the 9th Circuit decided in favor of plaintiffs in Peruta, the same panel issued decisions in Richards and Baker also in favor of plaintiffs. This ruling struck down the “may issue” policy in the entire 9th circuit.

The ruling was reviewed en banc and overturned. Last month Peruta petitioned for cert to SCOTUS.
