If he wants to continue reporting in Islamic countries, he has to be very circumspect about what he says about Islam. That said, only idiots could believe his conversion was sincere or metaphysically valid. I doubt he’d be in trouble for breaking Islamic laws or apostasy.
My theory on this incident is they were nabbed by some copycats with no real ties to the big boys, who found themselves in over their heads. Their demands, for example, were really dumb and unreasonable even by terrorist standards. Realizing they couldn’t get anywhere, they did the conversion thing and let them go.
