An interesting thing about this. My best friend is Pakistani and Muslim. He told me something interesting. If he and I went to a Muslim country, it wouldn’t piss people off that I didn’t follow the religion since I wasn’t Muslim. However, in these secular mideastern countries, if I was a Muslim, and I didn’t follow the rules of Islam, I could be punished.
For example, a convert or Muslim caught drinking can be severely punished.
These guys having converted to Islam may basically mean that they can’t return to a Muslim country or they can be legally punished for not following Islamic law.
It now applies to them in the eyes of Muslims.
Word to the wise news editor: when in the West Bank and Gaza, never hire a convertible.
That’s interesting - I heard him being interviewed Wednesday on NPR, and he didn’t deny the conversion; his phrasing was a little odd, but he said the reading materials he’d been given by his captors were illuminating and that he had a lot of respect for Muslims (which presumably would’ve been the case beforehand, why else would he be there reporting).
The conversion was forced (“We were forced to convert to Islam at gunpoint”). Surely nobody would accept being forced to recite some words as a valid conversion.
