HDTV - Any other dopers have it yet?

How many of us have HDTV yet?

How about a HDTV capable set, but not the tuner/reciever?

Anyone else actually watching TV in HD yet?

Do you know what HDTV is yet?

Non U.S. dopers, is HDTV rolling out where you live?

We’re trying hard to get it. Buildings all over the neighborhood have it but we can’t get it. It seems our nefarious landlord has made a deal with a company that doesn’t provide HDTV and is getting some kind of kickback. Were this the pit I would have some choicewords about it.

In my area (Boston, MA), only two local channels (2 and 5) offer HDTV broadcasts, and only for a few hours per night. I got rid of my cable last year, so I don’t know if my cable operator carries HDTV signals.
My impression is that not many people know or CARE about HDTV at all; certainly most are NOT willing to plunk down >$8000 for an HDTV receiver; my own opinion: I am not willing to spend a lot of money to watch more commercial-laced network fare in HDTV.
I think it will be a still-born technology, as it simply isn’t worth the asking price-certainly the TV station owners are not willing to invest the huge amount of money necessary to broadcast the HD signal.
WARNING: you have been reading a post from someone who (until recently) was watching a 1973 Westinghouse B&W TV set!:wally

Don’t have it, but I’ve seen demo sets at electronics stores.

Best. Picture. Ever.

You cannot possibly do HDTV justice with words. You have to see for yourself to truly appreciate it. When they drop in price and availability increases, we will wonder how we ever lived without it.

Of course when that day comes, there will still be nothing worth watching.

Soon, soon. We’ve had the HDTV set for a few months and recently bought a receiver too, but we’re waiting for the TV guy (my SO’s nephew) to come and hook up the receiver and rewire the whole kit - n - kaboodle back up.

I tried Circuit City the other day. They have some nice sets, a 54" HDTV for $2000.00, great picture, very bright. They had a lot of them in that price range. Also says near the bottom , set top box required for hdtv reception. How much for that? $550. lol
Someday.

It varies. The box I got is about a $1000 U.S. But, it is a DirectTV Sat reciever, and over the air reciever. It can recieve regular and HD satellite signals as well as analog and digital over the air. It also upconverts everything to 1080i for me. The real beauty of this one as my main tuner, it puts all the channels, regardless of source or type on one menu/channel list. It integrates over the air and satellite channels into a single list. It appears to the user that all the channels come from the same source. Very convenient.

Some/many of the TV’s are starting to come with the HD tuners built in.
