Seriously, what’s the story behind that one? Are any Simpsons writers originally from Letterman’s show?

Animation on “live” TV usually has the problem that the characters don’t wait for people to stop applauding.

Max Harvey: I believe so. I’ve heard many times that Krusty the Klown is based very closely on Letterman.

I don’t know about Letterman, but Conan O’Brien used to be a writer for the Simpsons.

Rusty Nails is a longtime kiddie show host in Portland where Groening grew up. He has a web site and “Rusty the clown” appeared as a balloon in a Simsons episode.

And Krusty’s voice is based on Bob Bell, who played Bozo the Clown in Chicago forever. Well, at least while Dan Castalaneta was growing up in the area.
