Health Care debate and Environmental policy

On a message board that I was reading the other day someone mentioned how the Health Care system in America is on the verge of bankruptcy and that it is destined to failure unless its expenditures are not reduced.
On another message board I came across a post about how several diseases are direct results of a polluted environment.
I then started thinking “Hey, wouldn’t it be a good idea if the government regarded the environment as part of the domestic social policy?”
Think about the economic benefits of a better environment, more specifically the millions of dollars the government could save every year in Health Care, money which is being spent on the treatment of diseases that are caused by a polluted environment.
What do you guys think?

What sort of regulations are we talking about here? We already have a shitload of rules and regulations, as well as an entire bureaaucracy, in place for the specific purpose of protecting the environment. What more do you want?

However, even with all those regulations, America still is the biggest polluter of the world…Remember when Bush decided to abandon the Kyoto Protocol? My point is not that we don’t care about the environment. My point is that we could do better, not only for the world, but for ourselves. That’s why I suggest thinking about the environment more broadly, looking at the positive externalities, such as the money we could save from Health Care expenses.
