Health insurance costs

I’m having to play $438 per month to cover my wife and son on a PPO plan (my employer covers me). I have a $1500 deductible per person per year, and then a $2500 out of pocket limit that only goes into effect after 1) two people completely satisfy the deductible and b) the same two people satisfy the $2500 limit.

It doesn’t cover labs done outside the doctor’s office. It doesn’t cover most maternity related procedures. No dental or life. No psychiatric, chiropractic or podiatric related costs are covered.

I can tell you, I’re really looking forward to having to pay 20% of the surgeries my daughter is going to require when the twins are born next year

My contribution per pay is $24.32, so multiply that by 26 and it looks like I pay $632.32. This is for my employer’s PPO through BC/BS, and I also pay $5 co-pays for office visits and a variable co-pay (either $8, $15 or $30) per prescription depending on where the drug falls in our plan’s formulary (i.e. preferred vs. non-preferred).

Honestly, I’d never looked at this lump sum number before. I knew they’d royally screwed us on our benefits after the last round of layoffs 2 years ago when they cut back and switched us to a cheaper insurance plan. I’m suspecting we’re about to get reamed again, having just gone through another round of layoffs. We usually receive a packet of benefit info in November telling us to review and submit any changes to HR before mid-December or so. This year, we’ve heard not a word, and it’s already edging towards mid-December. This does not bode well. ::sigh::

You can’t prove that

I work for Microsoft and I get a lot of “friendly” ribbing from other people about “How can you stand to work for the devil!” Well, I’m not married and my health insurance is fully paid by MS (not sure of the rules for spouses/children since I have neither). In addition, MS had two plans, as a very healthy person I took the cheaper HMO option and MS actually pays ME 10.00 a paycheck for opting for the cheaper option.

So, the cost of my health insurance (which is very nice insurance, free prescriptions, etc)? +$240.00 a year.

i pay around 300 a month for myself and two children…with emergency room visits and sickness i’m happy to have it, i just would like to pay less.

I’d been paying Kaiser $161 a month just for me; they did increase it recently, right around the time I became eligible for the coverage plan at one of my two workplaces. If I get at least 2 classes per semester, the college pays for the first hundred dollars and then I pay the rest.
The other place has nothing for part time instructors, though we are negotiating for a $500/semester stipend since the carriers tend to shy away from our “unstable group.”
