I suppose now is a good time for me to withdraw. Points conceded. I apologize if I was being a jerk or if I portrayed myself as unfeeling, I am not.
I guess I jumped in here trying to admonish the hero-worshippers where it wasn’t wanted.
Apologies.

Rule #1: Don’t be a jerk. Follow that one, and you should get along here just fine.
Speaking of which, I know it’s a tall request here on the Dope, but maybe some of the kneejerk reactionists could try to not let the mildest indiscretion against their opinions throw the entire thread into a tailspin of dysfunction about the trials and tribulations of threadshitting? Part of being an adult is knowing when not to succumb to provocation from others and just pay your respects without getting into what is admittedly an enormously juvenile fight over nothing.

Good point; my apologies for slightly furthering the hijack.

My comment was mostly directed at Equipoise. That name springs to mind whenever “getting the last word in” is the name of the game. I swear the reason I spend less and less time on this board is because certain people on here behave worse than five-year-olds. It’s simple … if someone is pushing your buttons, ignore them.
You just had to have the last shot, eh? Good for you.
Please God, no. It wasn’t my intention to have the last word. I am contrite. If you don’t believe me, then, well…sorry.
I was merely trying to explain myself. Damage done.
I saw this just before I had to sign off and go to work. I thought it had to be a mistake so I took a few extra minutes to search around the web and then it came on the news. I am shocked.
I saw the previews for the new Batman movie recently and Ledger was amazing in just the short clips they showed.
I read this whole thread before posting, if anyone else manages to do that and has no idea who Ledger is and doesn’t care or just has no sympathy at all, just don’t post here okay? Thanks.

What? Several people come into the thread and shit on people’s sadness, and I’m the one acting like a five-year old?? You spend less time here because of me?? What the hell did I do?

I’ve tried. I’ve been so sad all day long, and these people were just too much. I thought I was fairly calm compared to the Pitting I felt like doing, but didn’t, because I’m just too depressed.
I only meant it that way as a form of rebelling against celebrity worship…but we all have families and people that are upset when we die, so…I guess I was crass.
That’s so cool about how famous people shit just like us. Do you think that they try to draw pictures of other famous people, or do they do regular people they just saw on the sidewalk. I hope they do regulars. You know, to get in touch with the common people how we try to reach out and touch them.
Never really thought of him aside from any other actor, but I’ve been very excited about the new Batman movie. I was disappointed when I heard he was cast but have changed my opinion when I saw the trailer. I know it’s just clips but he looks fantastic. Such a shame that some people have cited this role as a reason for some of his mental stress.
He will be missed.
Also, this thread tastes angry.
Sorry I’m so late getting to this thread. Been a busy day. So, I guess we’ll start from the first page and move on down.
Walloon, I’ve just about had it with your particular fetish of interrupting threads to make one-off posts correcting someone’s grammar, or commenting on what you consider to be an inappropriate “tone”. It’s pretty frickin’ annoying, so if you’re not going to contribute to the discussion, then stay out of the thread.
Leaffan and FoieGrasIsEvil (and any other who feels tempted to do this in the future), while, in these memorial threads, we allow dissenting comments about an actor’s career, we don’t want someone threadshitting in here by coming in and arguing some silly point about how none of us “knew” the deceased. Yawning doesn’t help your case, either. Again, if you have nothing to say about the subject, then stay out of the thread–start a new one if you actually want to discuss what you consider to be hero-worshipping.
Equipoise, stop playing Junior Mod. You don’t get to tell other posters to “go away,” nor do you get to decide what is or isn’t allowed in a thread. If you feel someone has broken a rule, report the post and let a mod handle it. These threads aren’t sacrosanct, and someone’s bound to come in and disagree with you. Dissent, as I said above, is allowed.
Please note that none of these are warnings. Either they weren’t warning-worthy, or by the time I read over things, it all had worked itself out.
never heard about this clown or seen his face until today on CNN when they reported his death
Hah, was that a bad pun about his upcoming role!
C’mon **Wildfire ** has been a much better member his second time around. He posts with less broken English and responds to debate, all the while starting readbale threads. I say we keep him!
Still miss Ledger though.
Their deaths were tragic as well. Sure not a lot of people “knew” Heath, but you can still mourn a persons loss.
There’s a homeless guy I drive by most everyday coming into work. He’s had the same bum leg for years now. If someone started a thread “That homeless guy with a bum leg died of alcohol poisoning” I would be sad. Sure I didn’t know the guy, but I’d post to that thread.
Wildfire, they really don’t like that sort of stuff.
No, I didn’t know the guy, but yes, I am saddened that he is dead. I expected and hoped for many more roles like Ennis Del Mar from him - a performance that left me stunned.
That.
It may only be my perception, but it seems like only actors are subject to this “BFD, what did he contribute to society” attitude. (Maybe pop musicians, but I think not rock, jazz, classical and so forth.)
I mean, Douglas Adams was just a writer, no? Charles Schulz was just a cartoonist and Fred Rogers was just the host of a kids’ TV show. But I don’t recall anyone scoffing at their mourners. Why? Because Adams’s work is geek chic, thereby making it okay for geeks to feel a connection with him? Because people tended to get imprinted by Schulz and Rogers at an early age, so liking their work was not trendy?
But when it’s an actor who dies, it’s somehow wrong to mourn them. Even if you say you mourn the lost potential, it’s still wrong, because…why? Because they read from a script someone else wrote, and took direction from someone else, and therefore their work wasn’t really “theirs”? Or is it because actors tend to get a lot of bling, and free booty, and generally live higher on the hog than the rest of us? So if something bad happens to them, it’s just bringing balance to the Force?
I don’t read Terry Pratchett’s works, so I don’t read threads about him, but I am given to understand that he is ill and will probably not finish his series. Is that news getting a BFD reaction on these boards? I mean, it’s not like anyone here KNOWS him.
