Heath Ledger is dead!

Well, it’s all done. No idea if this will change the date and time of the release though. Damn pity, Ledger looks absolutely fantastic in the trailer.

You’re assuming he did this on purpose.

Did I know him personally? No. I knew of him, through his movies, and I enjoyed his movies. I’m not a hero-worshipper, but I don’t think it’s outside the realm of compassion to express sadness when a talented young man dies way too young. Just think of his potential that will never be realized. Just think of what other fine and fun movies he could have starred in.

I’m mourning the loss of the potential for more.

*The Olsen twins’ connection to Heath Ledger’s apartment is now clear.

Here’s the way it went down. A cleaning lady for Heath arrived at the apartment first, followed soon thereafter by a masseuse. They both entered the room at around the same time and discovered Heath’s lifeless body.

The cleaning lady called police. The masseuse, we’re told, called the bodyguard for the Olsens. She called him because they’re friends and he’s an EMT. The bodyguard was around the block at Ashley’s and he immediately went over. By the time he arrived, the cops were already there.*

I’m no fan of his, I thought Brokeback was dull and tedious and I hated his attempt at the accent. The rest of his body of work was pretty lousy as well, for the most part. However, now that he’s gone I’ve been seeing constant clips from the upcoming Batman and I have got to say that he definitely had solid potential to be great. He looks amazing in the role and it’s a damn shame that we won’t be able to see how this actor could have developed. His roles were just starting to get interesting, and no matter the cause of his death, it’s a shame. My condolences to the family, friends and fans.

See the shortsightedness of this is that a truly gifted actor can portray roles in ways that truly resonate with a lot of people. His ability to assume a role brining insight into it so that his characters are fully fleshed out, with all the nuances, in ways we identify with on a personal level (like his love-tormented cowboy), or to fulfill our expectations of a character that we have always pictured in our minds now brought into the flesh (like the Joker).

No I didn’t know him, but he brought that kind of magic in my world and, yes, I do feel saddened by that loss. Some people are carried away more by the cinema arts (living the adventure vicariously through the performers) and invest a lot more emotionally into that artform. Others can be deeply moved by a painting or poetry. When an artist is good enough to illicit a genuine emotional response, we really appreciate him or her and we mourn the loss of the talent and how connected it made us feel to the story/narrative/philosophy.

Also, Ledger didn’t have any pubicized history that would suggest his flame would be snuffed out early. So it’s a shock. If the headline had been “Robert Downey Jr. found dead” we would be still saddened but not terribly surprised, given his long well-publicized battles with addiction. For all I know, Ledger had his own trainwreck happening, but was able to keep it out of the papers. Or maybe it was just an accident from two very incompatible prescription meds. In any case, his death was sudden and unexpected.

Threadshitters need to have a bit more perspective. He was a gifted peformer that could really move people. Even if it’s artifice, it makes us feel connected. When you have an entire theatre-full of people trying to fight off the tears his performance brings, then he gave us a shared emotional experience and that’s beautiful.

This makes me very sad. Not because he’s my favorite actor - because he’s not. Not because he’s stunningly handsome - handsome yes, stunningly - no.

This makes me sad because of the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. That movie will always hold a very special place in my heart, and by association, so will Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles.

My oldest sister and I had a very, um, unfriendly relationship growing up. Her favorite hobby was beating the shit out of me. When we both became adults, we started working on fixing our relationship. The first ever sisterly, but more important - FRIENDLY thing we ever did, was to go see that movie together. I had a wonderful time and we both enjoyed the movie. Ever since that day, my sister has been my best friend. Every time I see that movie, or any other movie with one of the two main actors, I get that warm fuzzy feeling all over again.

I was at work this morning when I heard the news over the radio. I was cutting a sheet of rubber and was so shocked and saddened that I almost cut my finger off. :smack:

And now there’s no chance for “Brokeback Mountain 2: It Was Just A Bad Dream And Jack And Ennis Live Together Happily Ever After.” :frowning:

I’m not familiar with Heath Ledger’s work, only his name. Nevertheless I feel for those of you who are saddened by his death because I certainly understand how an actor or comedian, musician, any artist really, can touch a life. Performers bring joy or excitement or some other kind of emotional outlet into our lives, and sometimes they do it in profound ways that touch our hearts. I felt this way when Gilda Radner died. So for those of you who are experiencing grief for a man whose work was meaningful to you, I offer my heartfelt condolences. I don’t really give a shit if I sound ridiculous to the scoffers in this thread; I think that so many here have expressed sadness is a tribute to Ledger’s accomplishments.

Back to the OP, kind of…

An accidental overdose is not as common as people might think, especially with the new generation of sleep aids. For example, I heard a doc say today that you could take 60 Ambien and it wouldn’t kill you. However, if there are other drugs involved (possible bad interaction) or alcohol used in conjunction, the results can indeed be deadly. Maybe Qadgop or another doc will jump in on this…

I hope he just made a series of tragic errors. Not that it matters- his daughter is still left without a father, and that is a tragedy no matter who your daddy was, famous or not.

After a slightly fluffy start, I was expecting great things from him. :frowning:

Wait, I knew being homosexual was cause for immediate death, I didn’t know portraying one on film was as well

Oh, yeah, didn’t you get the memo? It’s a good thing this Christian nation is so much more tolerant than those damn Aye-Rabs.

WildfireMM** – you were told by a Moderator (see Post # 232 above by Skip Magic) to cease and desist. In two posts following that Warning (Posts #235 and 237 above), you failed to grasp the nature of that Warning.

You’ve been for over a year, and you should certainly know better. This is a second Warning.

The story of his death on the news last night carried a clip of him as the Joker and while it was a very, very short clip he looked like he might just own that role. I’d never been impressed by his acting before either, but damn. And not that this was his, but I loved the makeup they’re using for the Joker this time around too.

Well, if you were a good and righteous person, you wouldn’t sully yourself by playing one, either. That’s just encouraging them. (Dripping with sarcasm.)

(Missed edit window)That sarcasm was aimed at the religious idiots, not you, Wee Bairn.

Well… he sort of did. His heroin addiction was sort of an open secret in Hollywood and certain circles in New York, but it pretty much stayed in Blind Item territory. Don’t know if he was clean when he died or if he’d replaced it with pills and booze.

In what I consider a rather disturbing trend they had celebrity bloggers and some lady who steers celebs around Chicago on the news again last night being used as faithful reporters  reporting that while he was here filming he liked to drink at several local hotspots and was very drunk during a wrap party at the bar Carnival. It almost makes me miss Walter Jacobsen (almost).

Do you have any kind of support for this claim? I haven;t heard anything else echoed on any of the news coverage and it’s never been mentioned on any of the Hollywood blogs. In this day and age of TMZ, Superficial and Perez Hilton there’s simply no such thing as a “open secret” in Hollywood, especially as it concerns a popular, young, attractive performer.

Oh, but how can you be “good and righteous” if you’re running around producing children out of wedlock? (This was the main point of conversation in the lunchroom today…it was sort of funny watching all the eyes divert from the screen when the news station showed a clip from Brokeback Mountain.)

Something I just noticed today:

In at least 2 interview clips, Ledger is rubbing his face and chin. Not thoughtfully, but almost compulsively. I know this is total hindsight, but couldn’t that be construed as a sign of some sort of drug addiction? Not passing judgment here, you understand; just curious.

As regards Dark Knight , I think this could serve to boost the box office, being Ledger’s final film role and all. Not that it needed it, but possibly some non-genre fans could now be interested in seeing the movie. And don’t think for a minute that the advertising people won’t exploit the “final role” angle.

Anyhoo, sorry to see him go. He was a good actor who had a long impressive career ahead of him.
