Heathrow airport on high security alert. Offputting?

What’s that, then?

I’m actually inclined to believe you.

This looks like a tank too.

I had no idea martyrdom had become so unfashionable among the terrorist classes.

According to my travelicoty fairwatcher, prices on intercontinental flights are dropping faster than the rent on a burning building.

So it seems like lots of people are being put-off.

I’ll be landing there Tuesday morning so I suppose I’d rather have them there than not. It will make for an interesting vacation.

The IRA used to occasionally fire mortars at Heathrow. This doesn’t sound any worse than that.

Listen, I know it’s a democratic tradition to question if anything the government does has a political purpose, I think in this case the airport security at Heathrow may be justified.

Lest we forget, the last time there was a message from UBL (may he rot in hell), it was followed by a missile attack on an Israeli airliner, and a bombing at a Kenyan resort. This time around we get 1. the reported increse in “chatter” by terrorist, 2. followed by a message by UBL (may he rot in hell). It’s reasonable to assume that intelligence points to an attack on an airliner.

Yes, I think people are aware of the Kenyan incident but the thing is, old cock, it ain’t a lot of help deploying tanks, etc. unless your “intelligence” has it that OBL and the boys are going to turn up at Heathrow with a couple of hundred breeze blocks, fifty yards of sand, a concrete mixer, etc. with a view to knocking up a pill box.

Or perhaps the ‘intercepts’ have it that OBL’s going to cruise down the M4 with a convoy of armoured vehicles and occupy Windsor Great Park – in which case I’d imagine the anti-(M25)Rave legislation from the early ‘90’s might see him in click for some time.

In short – and as many will remember from 20+ years of IRA activity - terrorists don’t normally make themselves convenient targets for armoured columns.

Could just be a dress rehersal for when they get a real warning. Like when the war starts.

I think the whole point of the tanks and such is as deterrent, not to engage any terrorists.

My dad flew through Heathrow yesterday on his way back from India. He thought the tanks were bloody stupid.

Me, I wanna know how they make sure that when firing shells at terrorists they’re not going to interfere with planes trying to land. I’m sure that jumbo coming down will get lots of warning to divert to Gatwick before the firing begins.

No.
Now I understand the British Airways sale. :dubious:
