trying to find some heavy sounding instrumental rock/metal/classical music for a project i’m working on. can anyone point me in the right direction/ make a reccomendation?
Oh yes. Therion. Back with a link soon.
Check out a few tracks here.
You want Red Sparowes.
All the tracks on Vovin feature vocals.
Metallica - Orion, from Master of Puppets.
If you’re going the Metallican route, you could hardly do wrong to use Call of the Kthulu.
There’s always Iron Butterfly.
IIRC, the ‘Iron Butterfly Theme’ off their '68 debut, Heavy, was fairly heavy and instrumental.
You can hear a bit of it here.
Space Invader by The Pretenders
A Kind Of Loving by The Police
WTFF by Living Colour
Wouldn’t pretty much anything by SunnO))) fall into this category?
Check out the band Planet X… Very good instrumental metal music, with a taste for odd time signatures… or Sonata Arctica.
If you want something with classical instruments and a rock band, try Deep Purple’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra. It was listenable in the early 70’s, and the video was released in 2003.
Another vote for “The Call of the Ktulu” by Metallica. It’s a pretty long song - which might be helpful for your project. No need for repeats, etc.
A bragging side-note… Mr J can play that song quite well. I love it.
How about “Red” by King Crimson?
This site sould serve your needs.
Seconded! Many King Crimson pieces were instrumental, and many of them were quite heavy. Consider Larks’ Tongues In Aspic parts 1 and 2, for example.
Faith No More has one or two. “Woodpecker From Mars” from The Real Thing is fairly heavy, though a bit funky with the bass.
Also check out just about any Steve Vai album. I recommend “The Animal” from Passion And Warfare.
A lot of people would have trouble identifying their work as music. Earth or Boris might be better choices for the drone side of things.
How about some Apocalypitica? They have some instrumentals, like “In the Hall of the Mountain King” for one.
You should probably look into some Dream Theater as well. They’ve done several instrumentals that are mind-blowingly awesome.
Seconded. Especially the song “Erotomania.” I’ll add Porcupine Tree to the list, as they have some strange sounding, yet heavy, tracks.
What’s the project about?
Not heavy metal, but “weighty brass”. A few suggestions.
- Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum from Verdi’s Requiem. Imagine what happens when you tap the world’s most famous composer of grand opera on the shoulder and say, “Hey Giuseppe, ever considered writing a mass of death?”
- Practically anything by Wagner. Even his tender love ballads sound like music to kill by.
- Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. The old warhorse gets dragged out whenever the producer of a commercial wants dramatic sounding classical music. But there’s a lot more to it than O Fortuna. Some glorious and very weird shit, especially if you have a decent translation handy.
- Dream of a Witch’s Sabbath (Symphonie Fantastique, fifth mvmt) by Hector Berlioz. Now this is just a fucked-up piece of music, but in a French Romantic way.
