Heavy metal types: Help me learn these metal genres

Missed the edit window to get the links, but if you want to hear some fucking heavy music with Twisted Demon Vox instead of Cookie Monster Vox, try some Iron Monkey. Is the TDV better; i.e. more listenable, than CMV for you right now?

Out of curiosity I searched for “industrial melodic black metal” on Youtube (with the whole phrase in quotes), since that is what the OP was looking for. These songs are supposedly representative:

Confessional Secret by Contaminant
Legacy of Saints in Disguise by Thyrane
Cyanide Orgasm by Eroticide

I listen to a lot of industrial music, and I don’t hear a lot of industrial influence in this style. The classic industrial (industrial-speed?) metal like Thieves by Ministry is a lot more fun, IMHO.

My tastes are unnuanced, given my favorite subgenres are Industrial Metal and Alternative Metal. You can mostly understand the lyrics, and as a bonus there also chick singers at times (as opposed to all the time like Riotgrrls…Jack Off Jill and L7 are kind of metalish, Sleater-Kinney much less so)

I don’t know if I know any bands you wouldn’t have found on your own, but I’ll give it a shot. I won’t insult you by listing bands you must know, like Tool,Marilyn Manson, & Orgy.

Alt Metal
Greenwheel
Ra
Depswa
Prime Sth
Guano Apes
Industrial Metal
Econoline Crush
Sunna
Kidneythieves
God Lives Underwater
Pitchshifter

Can anyone recommend some good Goth metal bands? I’m at least minimally familiar with: Mechanical Moth, Pist*on, Beseech, and Entwine, all of which wiki once told me were goth metal (and Lacuna Coil and Type O Negative? LC doesn’t sound any more metal to me than HIM or The Flesh, and they’re not usually lumped in with Goth Metal)

I’d regard those as mislabeled. The most representative songs I can think of off the top of my head are Aphelion by …and Oceans and With No Human Intervention by Aborym. Even here, you’re not going to hear a lot of straight-up industrial influence (at least as far as I can tell); what’s different is that the guitars are relatively clean and there’s more of an electronic influence.

As the chick who recommended Opeth, I can highly recommend both Lacuna Coil (kinda gothy metal, female lead vocalist sharing vocals with a male lead) and In Flames.

I agree that LC isn’t extremely metal, though - certainly closer to “nu metal” these days than really “heavy” metal.

In Flames - Crawl Through Knives

Lacuna Coil - Fragile

Wow how far has metal come from my innocent youth listening to a choice of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden or even ACDC etc? We didn’t care what they were; all we knew was it was loud and pissed off our parents!

I don’t know why we need to caterogise metal as much as we do, although it does make it easier when looking for an album. It can also limit your exposure to “other” types of metal. My son was into death metal and would never take thrash seriously until he heard some [megadeth, metallica etc] in the car and said this is cool. So enjoy your sub genres but don’t be too quick to not listen to something because it is not in your genre of choice.

HIM is totally goth metal. If it wasn’t, I doubt that Metal Hammer Magazine would have devoted nearly 2 issues to the album release last year.

LC gets lumped into goth metal mostly because of their early releases. Their sound has evolved over the years so that now they’re more a straight ahead prog outfit, with metal tendencies (like Porcupine Tree, only with less talent and a better vocalist; yes I love Steven Wilson but his monotonous and limited vocals could use a counterpoint at the very least).

Type O Negative has always been a goth metal band (well, was), although they strayed far and wide in their influences over the years.

I’ve never heard of The Flesh, but if it’s this band, I’d say not goth. Nor metal. Nor much fun to listen to.

I’m sorry I can’t recommend any goth bands for you, but it’s not something I listen to, generally. I have Tiamat’s Wildhoney, but I’ve only actually made it all the way thru the album a handful of times (and it’s supposed to be their best album).

ETA: hey Ferret Herder, did you ever get ahold of Metal Hammer magazine? My offer still stands.

So where does Tool fit into Metal? I’ve always really liked them A LOT. In fact, listening to them right now.

But I gotta do my homework now, (which is checking out all the new links provided in this thread!)

I will definitely report back! I am excited about Friday’s show. I gotta admit, I do like seeing heavier live music because it’s always a very high male-to-female ratio. Meaning, there are lots of guys for me to look at

Last week when I was front-and-center on the floor at the Alice in Chains/Deftones/Mastodon show, I was a lone female in a sea of hot and sweaty and long-haired dudes. Yeah, it was fun for me :stuck_out_tongue:

Type O should not be lumped (IMHO) in goth-metal. They’re well above that. In fact, one of their most known songs, “Black #1” (on which hundreds of thousands of goth girls have swooned all around the world) is in fact pure snark at the goth cliché.

I have an irritating problem: I really love metal, but I hate, hate, hate cookie monster vocals. I’m pretty lonely.

I tend to stick with folkmetal, or just plain heavy metal bands. However, since we already have the collective wisdom of the SDMB assembled, can I ask for some recommendations too? Any new or newish bands without growling I should be listening to?

Mercyful Fate. Pretty much the antithesis of CMV.

Didn’t find it but I’m sure I just suck at looking. Shoot me a PM?

Like Kidneyfailure suggested, Mercyful Fate, also King Diamond solo. Candlemass. Some later Voivod.

Some more Bolt Thrower appreciation…

I’m playing Warhammer 40K today, and I’m planning on listening to Bolt Thrower while I do it.

Went to the show last night and had a great time! I actually really loved the bands, even the ones with CMVs. It was just great seeing the bands having fun and headbanging and shredding on their guitars and bass and drums, and kicking much ass. I will definitely be attending the monthly Mandatory Metal show from now on. There was even moshing! The crowd was really cool too.

Yep, this guy was there. I didn’t buy him a drink but I did help him out with the ATM machine!

Good for you! Glad you had a great time!

And good on you for helping that guy. Especially since nowadays when I go to shows, I’m usually him!

See “you” at the next show then!

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

I’m guessing you know Skyclad if you’re into folk metal. If not check them out.

There’s also a lot of other bands that I haven’t seen here, Rage, not Rage against the Machine. There’s also Gamma Ray and Iron Savior, which are similar to Helloween.

I think I’m dating myself to the mid-late 90s.
