Heavy metal types: Help me learn these metal genres

Symphony X and King’s X are more recent prog metal bands, although in the case of King’s X it’s more of a convenient label than anything else; they sound nothing like Queensryche or Dream Theater.

Megadeth are also, in a sense, a progressive metal band. All that meedly-meedly matched guitar stuff? That’s straight out of early Queensryche, just played faster.

Hey, I push Rage all the time. For symphonic metal, they fuckin’ rock. And I prefer Gama Bomb to Gamma Ray.

So, my metal friends, I just got tickets to see Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Vital Remains and Devourment on Nov. 21 at the Rock & Roll Hotel in Washington DC.

What say you all, is this a cool metal show for me to go to?

Anyone have any input on these bands?

They all have terrific band names.

Not my thing, but the first three are all pretty big names. It should be a fun show if you’re in to that particular genre.

Cannibal Corpse fucking rocks. One of the most awesome, brutal death metal bands ever. They would be worth the price of the ticket if they were the only band playing and if they only played for 60 minutes. They fucking rock. Did I say that already? 'Cause it bears repeating.

Dying Fetus was a decent enough grindcore-style band back in the 90s. I haven’t heard either of their 2 most recent albums (with a totally new band than the old days), tho.

Vital Remains last album was pretty well received. Lots of loooooong death metal songs. Think Opeth without the dynamics and acoustic parts getting in the way, but still leave the songs at 9 minute lengths.

Devourment is one of those wacky death metal bands: not a single founding member is still onboard, each album has been released by a different label, the band has broken up completely at least 3 times… you know, one of those bands. That said, their last album was supposed to be pretty decent, and it must not have sucked too bad because they got signed by Relapse back in June or July. I remember seeing it on their website.

In fact, if you should prolly bookmark these:

Between those three labels, you can prolly find close to 40% of all metal bands in either the US or UK.

Thanks snowboarder Bo! I am looking forward to the show. The venue seems pretty cool and intimate.

FUCK ME!

The Dead Kennedys are playing there tomorrow night, and I’m nowhere near DC.

fuck fuck fuck fuck

I don’t particularly like what I’ve heard of Dying Fetus…the vocals are more like belch-talking than the typical Death Metal Growl. And I can take Cookie Monster Vocals seriously…but Burp-Singing, not so much.

Just an update. Unfortunately I had to miss this show. I had my ticket and was really looking forward to going, but suddenly I got a gallbladder attack a week before, and was laid up in the hospital for 6 days to get it removed, so I missed it. I was so sick that I couldn’t even get online to sell/give away the tickets on Craigslist or Facebook. I am sure that I could have found someone to take them. :frowning:

But fear not because I have not given up my interest in metal. I am planning on going to the next Mandatory Metal night (the series that sparked this thread) on Dec. 16th. I better not be sick again!

Just throwing this out a nice little reference

There never was much of a difference, which is why the term “speed metal” is hardly used anymore. The current term is “neoclassical metal.”

Were I to make a distinction, I’d say that thrash metal is primarily rhythm-based (and decidedly retro these days; a modern example would be Trivium) whereas neoclassical metal focuses on multilayered guitar solos with classical overtones. (Example = Helloween.)

Megadeth is more akin to technical metal. IMHO, the term “progressive” requires the band to employ a full-time keyboard player.

Kings X’s isn’t metal at all – hard rock, perhaps, but not metal!

Love the “triple umlaut” part.
