Heisman Poll

Not one? That’s a bit of an overstatement. Tebow could very well be a Vince Young.

Am I being whooooooooooooshed? I don’t follow the NFL too much, but I do know that V Youngs QB rating hovers in the low 70’s while the better QBs have ratings at 100 and above.

VY has also had quite a good record as starting QB of the Titans.

tear It has been a fine year of football here at the Capstone, a fact my semester grades will surely reflect. Well done, Mr. Ingram. Roll Tide.

College football and pro football are two different things. Guys like Tommy Frazier, James Street and Tony Rice never had a prayer of making it as NFL quarterbacks, but they ran the wishbone to perfection, and brought national championships to their schools. They didn’t win the Heisman, but they DESERVED serious consideration. And if they’d won the award, it would be silly to suggest they were undeserving just because they didn’t make it as pros.

Or would you argue that Tom Brady (a benchwarmer at Michigan, a superstar in the pros) deserved the Heisman more than Danny Wuerffel (a superstar in college, a bust in the pros)?

In any case, some pro football superstars have won the Heisman, too- do the names Roger Staubach, OJ Simpson, Marcus Allen, Earl Campbell or Tim Brown ring a bell?

The Heisman is neither a predictor of pro success nor a jinx.

Congratulation to Ingram and the Crimson Tide. Ingram was the unstoppable force that, combined with the tenacious D, won the SEC championship. The better team won and Ingram was a deserving Heisman winner, although as in any year a lot of deserving guys didn’t win. You’d better beat Texas on the 7th, and we’ll see what we can do about Cincy.

Respectfully,

Shibb, Gator alum

Recently though, the Heisman winners have done pretty bad in the NFL. Ricky Williams was the last great NFL player to win it. Carson Palmer’s been good at times. No one else has really done anything. Last year I would’ve said that Bradford would be a surefire success story in the NFL, but with his injuries, who knows.

I’ve seen a lot of smart commentators point out that Ingram wasn’t even the best player on his team. I think it should’ve been Gerhart or Suh.

It’s amazing to me that Ingram’s backup, Trent Richardson, is probably just as good if not better than Mark.

Are the votes made public?

The votes of this poll were public. But I think the Heisman vote is a secret ballot. Colt McCoy said that Sam Bradford voted for McCoy. Tebow didn’t reveal his vote.

Yes, I meant the actual voting for the trophy.

Young is 22-11 as an NFL quarterback despite twice taking over teams that started 0-4 or worse.

For the record, the highest career QB rating in the NFL is Steve Young at 96.8. A single-season over 100 would put you in the top 50 seasons by a QB ever.

VY hasn’t been great statistically (well, except for the W-L record), but it’s an overstatement to suggest that 100 and above is the standard.

His passer rating also doesn’t take into account his 1149 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

This is one reason why my family of 'Bama lovers would have rather seen McCoy win than Ingram – to see a replay of '92.
The other reason is that we would love to rack up dozens of National Championships over the next several decades without a single Heisman trophy. In a way, this almost tarnishes things… as though our wins only came about because we were lucky enough to recruit this one superman. Much cooler to win multiple NC’s without a single Heisman. I would have liked to see the streak of NC’s *sans *HT’s continue forever.

But, obviously, I’m happy for Ingram.

Is Ingram a sophomore?

Yep. And Richardson is a true freshman.
