Helen Thomas retires, sooo....

Why is this such a big deal? Who cares, haters gonna hate etc…

I never understood why she was treated with such deference in the first place. I’m not aware of any major stories that she ever broke as a reporter.

She earned her reputation by years of asking tough questions, not answering questions.

Seems sort of like asking movie actors about foreign policy – that’s not their field of expertise; why should their opinions have weight?

The Pit thread is closing in on 300 posts.

A.

And let’s be realistic. She didn’t retire. She got fired, and rightly so.

Yeah, she asked tough questions- dd she ever get any memorable answers?

She’s been referred to as the dean of Washington reporters for as long as I can remember. She’s won every journalismaward under the sun. All I’m asking for is a few important stories that Helen Thomas ever broke as a reporter.

Anybody?

Can you name a few scoops she provided? Any major scandals she personally uncovered? Any important stories that she dug up befor eanyone else?

There’ aren’t any that I’m aware of.

All she did for most of her career was show up at press conferences and ask questions that were usually skirted or talked around.

She sniped at George W. Bush- if that alone is enough to make her a heroine in your book, I think your standards are too low, but that’s your business.

But whereas many people are saying “this is a sad end to an illustrious and distinguished career,” I can’t see what she ever did that was so illustrious or distinguished. I think she was a crazy old bat all along, one who was treated with far more respect than she deserved.
