Hey, Folks!
It’s been a little more than two weeks and a lot has happened (besides the board being hacked!).
I write you at 2045, Sunday about 350 miles east of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea, bound for the Adriatic and taking up our station off Kosovo.
I’ll be pulling into northern Italy next weekend and have already made plans to spend a day in Venice. After a night of rest in Pisa, I’ll be heading north to the Italian Alps (Eat your heart out falcon!).
I’ll keep you up to date when communication avenues available to me are clear.
Have a great Navy day!
“Though I hate 'em, I’ll defend to my death your right to use smilies.”
Forward deployed until 18AUG00
I remember when I suggested that ChiefScott was heading for a nice vacation, I was accused of exaggeration. Well it turns out I was right!
Enjoy your cruise, ChiefScott, and while you’re in Venice, please try to catch a snapshot of a baby pigeon. Rumour has it that baby pigeons don’t exist. (Actually, this is very mysterious. Maybe I’ll ask Cecil about it!)
Well, a big howdy to you, Chief! Glad to know you’re getting to see some of Italy.
If you’re really going all the way from Venice to Pisa, you might want to see if you can get some cheap lodging at Camp Darby (US Army post), about 20-30 minutes from Pisa.
Have a blast!

Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.
Hiya, Chief! I’d wondered how you were doing, but figuered you’re just busier than a dog in a thicket of fire hydrants. (Otherwise we would have seen some sterling, patented, accept-no-substitute flaming during the recent troll infestation.)
The Italian Alps, fine food, fine wine…well, have a blast, Chief. You deserve it!
By the way, Coldfire also went to the French Alps recently. I was in the Swiss Alps around Christmas/New Year (1999/2000), so the SDMB was represented there also.
Good to hear from you, Chief. We really could have used you during the recent troll invasion, that’s true.
I’m jealous! Not only are you getting to see a part of the world I haven’t, but you’re a lot closer to my hubby than I am. sigh
Enjoy your time there. Wave at him, if you get a chance! He’s in Abu Dhabi, BTW.
Seen on billboard near home:
Don’t make me come down there.
God
Fair winds and following seas to you, ChiefScott (will your handle soon change to SrChiefScott?). I was strictly Westpac, but shipmates who’d sailed the Med would tell me tales of when the Soviet navy used it as its main confrontation ground with the USN; cutting across our bows and so forth, and our sqids would respond by hurling insults and rotten potatoes (much like the Sand Pebbles did when Chinese junks would try to unload their chain of river demons with the same manuvers). Please post any newly aquired sea stories: they are the only free-bee in your enlistment package. And if you need a laugh, check out the thread about lack of school bathroom stall doors. In my navy the philosophy was that if you couldn’t blithely crap in full view of ship’s company, then you didn’t really need to go in the first place, but were just skating out of ship’s work, and if you couldn’t sleep in a berthing compartment directly under the flight deck during Harrier landings, then you weren’t tired enough to have given Uncle Sam an honest day’s work.
Hey Chief-
Do you still have “wog day” or something like that when they cross the equator? How is it handled now with women? Do you know what I’m talking about?

Hey, if you get GBS something from Venice, you better remember she has a very lovely daughter…just kidding…It’s good to hear from you ChiefScott…keep us posted.
