Hello from Vienna

You know what they call German Potato Salad in Germany?

And here I thought we were going to be discussing the merits of Vienna, Virginia. The one in Austria PROBABLY trumps it on the culture front, although I bet it hasn’t hosted as many Freedy Johnston concerts.

Have you seen the Hundertwasser House? It contains no straight lines, except for doors and windows. And it has trees growing out of it.

No Panache, I’d love to as it sounds really interesting. I think we have made trouble for ourselves as we didn’t realise that Christmas is also celebrated on the 24th here and so a lot of places are closed now until we leave.

We did do more markets, and the Hapsburgs Palace- I am overwhelmed by the luxury of what was there and also walking up so many stairs. No idea how Franz Josef did it at 86.

Get it I was being whooshed with small sausages but actually had them today.

What really irks me is today, as we were leaving the Hofburg my wife asked if I’d like to visit the Military Museum as it is an interest of mine. I said no, as we have seen so many cannons etc over the years. I did say however I’d love to see the car in which Archduke Ferdinand was killed and would research it when we got back.

Yes- you guessed it is in the military museum. Fortunately it is only a few blocks away but I need to convince her that the car isn’t there on Saturdays.

Many thanks to Spice Weasel as I had never heard of the song previously referred to.

Just a quick beef. I love Vienna and the people who live here are extremely friendly. (The snooty guests at the hotel and the way they treat the staff not so nice).

However two things do annoy me- firstly is the smoking in cafes, restaurants and bars. The rest of Europe bans it (so I was told) and I would love to see it introduced here.

Secondly, the touts trying to flog you tickets to some concert- always “almost sold out, only a few tickets left”. They are in period costume of some sort, and they are trying to make a living I guess but when you get approached around 40 times a day it does wear thin.
