I cancelled my eMusic subscription last year shortly after they stopped offering the “unlimited” downloads.
No harm, no foul. I know that they’ve gotta make money somehow, and I figured it was too good to last.
I occasionally get emails from them promoting some offer or another, asking me to come back. Got one today, in fact.
I decided to click on the link in the mail, figuring I’d check it out to see if the offer had improved.
Lo and behold, I get a page saying something like, “Thanks for re-registering. You get 40 free downloads, and we’ll start billing you next month!”
The fuckers had pulled old information from my profile, without asking for any new info or confirmation.
That’s pretty fuckin’ low, not to mention a totally non-secure way to process CC transactions.
I’ve of course cancelled the account (again), and sent them a rather snippy note telling them to delete my CC info from their database. I seem to recall somebody saying they get kind intimidated by the BBB. If they rebill me again, they’re dead meat.
I suppose I bear some responsibility for this for not reading the fine print at the bottom of the three page email. But still, fuck them. I’ve done business with commercial porn sites that are far less sleazy, and I didn’t really expect something like this coming from people who had previously been retty cool.
You know, I originally bought in to the service because of my moral qualms about file trading. Shit like this helps me overcome those last few twinges of guilt.
alt.binaries.sounds.*, anyone?
