I’ve read some of these threads and there are experts here in related situations so hopefully you’ll be kind enough to assist me.
Here’s the background:
I’ve been under the radar for many years now. I gambled for a living, worked regular jobs for several years, gambled professionally again, and then traded various markets until it all came crashing down a few years back. One thing I always sucessfully managed to do was keep the federal govt. out of my pocket. I even created a credit file which I used to buy a home. Unfortunately, I was unable to recover from the market crash and am now forced to sell my home. Went to check my ORIGINAL (and real) credit file and was shocked to discover two federal tax liens which total an incredibly large amount. How they came up with this number is beyond me but protesting/paying it/even an offer in compromise, is out of the question…I just can’t afford it.
The problem:
Thanks to 9/11, I have been forced to use this original SSN on my most recent brokerage accounts, which are now closed. My current plan was to take the proceeds from my home sale and open a new brokerage account. I will NOT be trading actively(I’ve had enough of that) and will be conservative, making a safe investment that will yield dividend income. My worry of course, is that if I use my real SSN again, the feds will eventually get wind of it and confiscate these only remaining assets.
The question:
It is likely that if I feed the new broker my “created” SSN, they will reject it and I’ll end up having to provide them with the real one. Is there any way I can open this account without using this toxic SSN? I have learned that you can legally request a new SSN but I would imagine that this would be linked to the old one and the feds will eventually tie the two numbers together. I am also concerned that doing this might send up a red flag and it might actually trigger an investigation. I’m at my wits’ end here. Finally thought I could live out my days in peace and now this bombshell drops. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to read this.
