Help! Any clever ideas on how to recover a stolen car in Chicago?

What is your building’s policy on abandoned/inoperable vehicles?

Many place, you’re not allowed to park a non-functioning vehicle. A car that had flat tires and fluid leaks may qualify.

The fat that it wasn’t registered may be another clue. First, it may be illegal to have an unregistered vehicle. Second, around here, in order for a company to remove a vehicle from private property they still have to involve the police. If the vehicle wasn’t registered there’s no way for them to notify you of the tow immediately, though you may get a letter from the DMV eventually if you were the last registered owner.

Well, the police found it on the street 1/4 mile from where it was stolen. I guess the joy riders weren’t overjoyed at not being able to brake! Someone called and reported a “suspicious vehicle”. Unfortunately, that was the ONE day I was out of town, and out of cell phone reach, and the nice police officer tried to contact me, including making two trips to my building to find me before his shift ended and he had to have it towed. It would have been better if he left it, because the impound lot told my insurance company that they won’t release the car unless it has current plates and city sticker, etc. I wasn’t driving the car, nor planning to, so I’m a little screwed. The police officer said my stuff was still in the car (papers, books, etc) and he locked all the doors. Chicago’s finest!

Ouch, you know you are collecting HUGE daily storage fees, right?

Well, I was misinformed. For some reason the insurance company was able to retrieve the car from the city pound without my input and tow it to their own lot for evaluation. Phew! State Farm adjustors told me they were surprised, and this is a new development (city letting cars go without all the onerous requirements) in the last few weeks. I wonder what changed, maybe the city got sued by someone?

That’s awesome news!
