Help! Blood in the stool (TMI)

My feces are the usual brownish color, but they are slightly more red and there is a lot of blood in the toilet’s water.

I checked this site: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003130.htm

It says that blood in the stool can be because of a “Mallory-Weiss tear (a tear in the esophagus from violent vomiting)” and I did vomit quite violently some hours ago. Could this be the cause? On the other hand, the blood is bright red, not dark brown as the site suggests.
I had hemorroids some weeks ago, but they have healed complelety now. And I don’t feel any pain anywhere on my body.

What should I do? (until I see a doctor, that is)

Speaking from experience: an emergency room visit might not be a bad idea. I am still recovering from a similar incident that occurred last Wednesday evening. Thursday morning, I passed out from blood loss and wound up in the ER anyway.

Holy Cow!

Damn Darwin WTF is the deal? This happened to me several years ago. I passed so much blood anally I nearly bled to death. I had been suffering from some bad ass headaches that weekend and nothing I did seemed to help. Without realizing it I had consumed way too many Excedrin over the weekend. My blood was thinned so much that it was seeping into my digestive system…stomach, intestines, colon were all full of blood. I had also drank a bunch of Cuervo that day hoping to get rid of the pain. I did…passed out cold on the toilet…fell onto the floor and bled out for several minutes until my roomate came looking for me.
I finally was able to stand. I took a shower and started bleeding again. We wound up in the emergency room where I git several units of blood and after they stuck a bunch of tubes, cameras and enemas w/ butt plugs up my ass they came to the conclusion that I might have diverticulitis. That and the thin blood combined with the acetomenophin, caffeine and tequila caused me to bleed internally.
It was a one time occurrence however and I’ve been checked since …nothing there.

Dog I’d get some Iron in me at the very least. Take no aspirin or similar pain relievers…no alcohol. Basically don’t consume anything that’d thin your blood.
A barium? enema w/Xrays will probably be the first thing they’ll want to do. It’s uncomfortable as hell but not really painful and the relief of knowing anything is worth it.
Sounds like you maybe right though about the vomiting. Just the acid getting in your throat can cause some bleeding. Maybe my experience will make you feel a little better about your own. It’s not quite that bad is it?
good luck bud

This is the second time it’s happened to me. Last time was about 10 years ago, and I very nearly died. Wound up hospitalized for a week, had transfusions and everything. This time, it wasn’t quite so bad (at least I didn’t go into shock this time). Nevertheless, the last week has been no fun, lemmee tell ya. I get exhausted just taking small walks, and for a while I couldn’t walk more than a few paces without nearly passing out again and having my heart rate skyrocket. I’m pretty sure I’m still a bit low, bloodwise, but at least I can stand without problems. I still wake up with massive pounding headaches, though.

It’s definitely not something you want to take chances with, Dog80.

I’m not taking any medication and I havent drank any alcohol lately (I guess some Baileys mixed in my coffee doesn’t count  ). And I don’t feel pain, not even when having bowel movements. I am just fine. Damn! I’m moving back to Greece in a couple of weeks. Can’t it wait until then? :frowning:

If it isn’t worse tomorrow I’d just keep a close eye on it and don’t get too far away from help if needed. Definitely have somebody around just in case. It sounds like you’ve got a little blood. A little bit looks like a lot. An ounce or two in water will appear to be way more than it actually is. I wouldn’t get just extremely worried but I also wouldn’t just blow it off either. I can’t tell ya what to do. I am not a Dr. that’s for sure.
Just my opinion and experience suggests to me that I’d give it a day or two then decide. You’ll probably know more tomorrow.

You haven’t been eating any of that damned blood pudding crap I hear you folks love so much have ya?

BTW WTF were you vomiting so bad for?

Blood in the stools indicates lower GI tract bleeding. Good for a visit to the ER.

Green or black stools indicates bleeding in the upper GI tract. Good for a visit to the ER.

Let us know how you’re doing when you get back.

Friend of mine just had blood in his urine in conjunction with a bad fever, vomiting, etc. Bacterial infection: a course of antibiotics cleared it up.

I’d go with the people who suggest not waiting to seek treatment for this, but IANADoctor.

Dog80, didn’t you start a thread a while back about possibly having a hemorrhoid? It’s possible that a 'rhoid might have broken, as it’s just a funky blood vessel. From my understanding, internal 'rhoids aren’t very painful, so you might not even feel it. Also, bright blood is ‘new’ blood, so my WAG is that the blood is from your intestinal tract.

Either way, blood in the merits an immediate visit to the doctor. If it’s not hemorrhoid-related, snd even if it is, it sounds like you might need to alter your diet a little to promote bowel health. Eat lots of fiber, and you might try taking acidophilus pills, which replace the good bacteria in your intestine, and are supposed to help with constipation. (Just assuming you might be constipated, with the combination of 'rhoids and bloody stool)

Hemmorhoids or anal fissure are probably the most likely candidates, but since most of us here are not doctors, obviously get yourself to one soon if symptoms don’t clear. Thing is, with anal fissures, they’re a bitch because they tent to retear every time you pass a stool. The fact that the blood in the toilet is bright red is better than finding darkened blood in your stool.

Anyhow, get it checked out.

Red, liquid blood is usually a good sign - dark clots would be more worrying. I had this happen to me. Scared the life out of me and I went straight to the doctor, who sent me for a colonoscopy (without anaesthetic. Ooh matron!). It was indeed an internal 'roid, which they simply injected with adrenalin to kill. Quite an interesting feeling, to get a sudden fight-or-flight reaction with a big old tube stuffed up your arse…

Anyway, even though it’s probably benign, blood in the stool is an instant red flag (sorry) for a doctor’s visit.

Because the blood is still red and not clotted, it originates from the descendant part of the colon, from the sigmoid, or from the rectum --> NOT from your stomach. You are actually vomiting because of this, not vice versa. This won’t heal without treatment, and is very dangerous in many ways.

You should see a doctor ASAP!!!
