Don’t you have things around the house that the cats are allowed to scratch instead of the furniture, like carpeted scratching posts or those corrugated scratching boxes (Emma loves hers.)?
If they’re trained not to scratch furniture, you should be able to keep them from scratching the new stuff, too (nice set, btw!).
Emma, who we got when she was 5 years old, had obviously been trained not to scratch furniture, as she never even tried it once. However, when we got a brand new chair, for whatever reason, she did stand on the arm and start scratching at it as she does her scratching boxes. We put an immediate stop to that by temporarily covering the arms with aluminum foil, which cats HATE to walk on. After just a few days she learned the arms were not for scratching, and she has never scratched at them again and it’s been about 2 years now.
Good luck!
