Here’s my situation: My wife and I just moved in (yesterday) to our first home, a townhouse that we spent way too much money on. I woke this morning to find about 16 “house” flies on a finished basement window. No big deal, I figured we let these in when we moved and played my role at the top of the food chain. Fast forward four hours later, returning from the Home Depot, again 16 “house” flies on the window. Fast forward to now, I’ve killed about 40 to 50 flies today and no longer have any illusions that these flew in during my move. They now have spread and appear on the first floor windows as well.
Sounds like you have some sort of dead animal (rat or mouse) playing maggot hotel in your house. Start with some nice, cheap flypaper. See if this latest brood peters out in a week before resorting to more expensive measures.
Get an exterminator in quick. Also, advise your closing attorney of the infestation problem. You may be entitled to have the cost of remediation reimbursed.
Make sure you get proper documentation from the exterminator if you intend to make a claim against escrow.
A new day, more flies. There seems to be significantly less (only about 20 or so) to kill when I got home from work. Also, I located 3 dead birds in my chimney, which I was able to remove. God, the smell is still in my nostrils.
So here’s the question:
My father believes the dead birds and flies to be unrelated and that all of these flies were let in during the move. Is this possible? Say we had the door open for 3 hours, how many flies could have possible made it in? Does anyone (as I do) think the birds are the culprit?
Oh, also, should I have a chimney sweep come out and inspect? Is there something wrong with the chimney that allowed the birds in? Could there be more up there?
Sorry for the confusion, the face fly is similar to the common house fly. I believe a have either face, cluster, or blow flies. Damn little things, I never wanted to research this much about winged insects.
