I’m trying to find a Supreme Court decision from the early 80s, and I’m not having much luck. I’m hoping someone can help me find it or lead me in the right direction.
I’m told the case was heard in the early 1980s, and it settled an annexation battle between the City of Avondale, Arizona and the City of Goodyear, Arizona. The result of the case was, as I understand it, that the two cities would have set Planning Boundaries, and could not annex beyond those set boundaries.
I’ve searched on findlaw.com, and don’t have access to Lexis. Any other ideas? Can anyone save me a lot of time and find the case?
Are you sure it was the U.S. Supreme Court? There’s an Arizona Supreme Court case dealing with annexation and Equal Proetection that gets taught in local government law a lot; it’s Goodyear Farms v. City of Avondale, 148 Ariz. 216, 714 P.2d 386 ( 1986).
I’m not sure it was the US Supreme Court. The guy who told me about the case said it was the SCOTUS, but I have no trouble believing he was wrong. Thanks, I’ll check out the Arizona SC case.
For some reason, people who aren’t versed in law tend to forget that there are State Supreme Courts, and hence “Supreme Court decision” automatically equates in their minds to “SCOTUS.”
Not only that, but from what I understand the “Supreme Court” in New York State refers to the original jursidiction trial court that hears felonies and civil matters (courts that would be called “district” or “superior” elsewhere), while the highest court is simply the “Court of Appeals.” Very confusing for us Law & Order fans.
