Help, How to Get Red Mud Out of a Shirt.

My daughter got red mud on her favorite shirt. I have tired soaking it with shout, that didn’t work. I also sprayed grease lighting on it and let that soak, that didn’t work… Any ideas???

Try OxyClean.

When I was a kid, my grandmother used this stuff called “Goop” on stains. It came in a white plastic jar and looked a bit like Crisco. It took out every stain she ever put it on.

Whatever you do, don’t dry the shirt until you get that stain out. I’ve had stains set for life as soon as I stuck them the dryer :frowning:

Most of those sprayon cleaners are designed for grease and protein stains. You’ve got a mineral stain.
Get yourself a box of Borax.

Squink is right - this stain is a different sort of beast than the usual chocolate, red wine, coffee, blood, grass kind of stuff that most stain removers are aimed at.

You should also be aware that, in many places, that red mud is used to dye shirts and other garments, precisely because the color is so permanent. If all your stain removal efforts come to naught, you might consider just soaking the shirt in a bucket of red mud. “I meant to do that!”

White vinegar is good at dissolving minerals. But I would test it on an inconspicous spot first. It might remove the dye.

If the red is iron oxides (rust), vinegar isn’t going to do much good. Treating the shirt with a paste of an Oxalic acid containing cleaner, such as Zud or naval jelly is your best bet if a simple borax wash doesn’t do the job. Brush in the paste, let it dry, and then wash again with borax.
Still, as Early Out implies, tiny particles of metal oxides stick tightly to fabric, and it simply may not be possible to completely remove the stain.

No luck so far… Guess I’ll just have to find another shirt to match her skirt. Which isn’t going to be easy… It’s a hard color to match up… Thanks for your help…
I hate the south… :frowning:
