Carnival of Souls. It’s an obscure cult film (if such a thing is possible) and very creepy.
Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” and “Vincent.” They’re shorts he made while working at Disney (no lie!). The first is about a boy who brings his dog back to life; the Frankenstein jokes are hilarious. The second is a cartoon about a little boy who wants to be Vincent Price; Price does the narration.
Videodrome. Not a horror picture in the traditional sense, but filled with bizarre and horrific imagery.
The Doctor Who series have a lot of good epidsodes for Halloween. “State of Decay” has vampires, and most have alliens. They’re not horrifying or too gross.
If your friends are highbrow, you might try A Company of Wolves, an stylish telling of Little Red Riding Hood. Also any Clive Barker- Rawhead Rex, his first one is worth a look.
AWB and Phobia, you’re too good!
“On the edge of sleep, I awoke to a sun so bright…”
I agree with the Hellraiser movies. The first one was the best. I actually liked the second, and it is also takes place a great deal in two scary places: psyc-hospitals and hell.
For a more suspenseful gore type movie that is really more freaky than scary try “Cube”
‘The beginning calls for courage; the end demands care’
I don’t think Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been mentioned. It and The Thing are good IMHO too. Throw in The Cats Eye and you’ve got a night. I can’t recall if Cats Eye is the title of that King series of short stories or not, I’m sure someone will chime in and clarify soon.
