This has been bugging me for a couple of weeks now, and I’m having no luck finding this book(s?) I’m looking for. I read it back somewhere between 95 and 97. I don’t remember if it was a collection of several stories featuring the same characters, a book series, or even if it were several books bound in one. I do know the guy I borrowed it from got it from the scifi book club, so there’s a good chance it was one of their combined volumes.
As for what happens in the book.
At the beginning, there is a young woman with a beautiful singing voice. Her village is attacked, and in the process she gets brutally raped. During her attack, her voice is damaged so she can no longer sing. (I want to say they call her Raven from this point on, but not sure.) While she is healing, she is visited each night by warrior spirits who train her in the various arts of fighting.
At first she dies in her dreams, but slowly improves her skills. As she progresses, she fights more and more spirits in her dreams, until she can defeat many at once. After her training is complete, she sets out to find the ones who destroyed her village.
While traveling, she hooks up with a female magician, and they travel the world together righting wrongs.
At one point in the story, the magician defeats someone by conjuring a scorpion into his shoe.
At another point, the ladies are caught in separate cages. One of them remarks that this wouldn’t have happened when they were younger.
I can’t remember anything else about the book. I’d love it if someone could help me find the title so I can a copy.
