7 days after a trip to Toronto, I came down with quite a cough, and then some flu symptoms. Fear SARS I rushed to the Hospital, where they assured me ill be OK. Well the next day, I had this unquenchable thirst. Seriously I drank twelve 24 oz. bottles of water. I let it all out in such long “sessions” that I get bored of standing there, and have begun to sit down. Now two days later, I am very itchy. Stomach to knees. Now, I had this itching last year when winter started and the air dryed and my dry heat began to be used in my appartment. My Doc told me to buy this Eucerin lotion, over the counter, and the scratching ceased. Now let me also add, i am always a thirsty person. I soley drink water (except when Im drinking alcohal) meaning no soda, juices or kool-aids. Am I just a dry person? I know some other theorys from co-workers and friends say dehydration is a symptom of diabeties, but i was in an HIV vaccine study for the past 18 months, and diabeties is one of the things that I was tested for on a monthly basis. And after mentioning that let me add the first itching occurance when the Doc gave me the Eucerine, was before the Vaccine, so I dont attribute it to that. So any idea’s on how I can keep the water in my body??? Thanks TM
I am not a doctor but you have several of the symtoms of diabetes. Perhaps you should check out this site to see if there are more symptoms you recognize:
“friends say dehydration is a symptom of diabeties, but i was in an HIV vaccine study for the past 18 months, and diabeties is one of the things that I was tested for on a monthly basis.”
All that agrees but this is a monthly test, and it clearly say neg on all posibilities on diabeties…
Could this be a side-effect of the HIV vaccine?
There’s also a disorder known as diabetes insipidous. It’s not an insulin disorder so it won’t show up in diabetic screenings. Instead it’s a disorder of the adrenal glands that causes excessive urination. It’s diagnosed by an endocrinologist.
This is a possibility. I suffered a temporary case of diabetes insipidus a few years ago, and no matter how much I drank I was always thirsty because anything I drank went right through me without much of anything being absorbed by my body.
“And after mentioning that let me add the first itching occurance when the Doc gave me the Eucerine, was before the Vaccine, so I dont attribute it to that.”
…did any one read the OP???
“There’s also a disorder known as diabetes insipidous” ----> Is this something I should take immediate action on?
I certainly would make an appointment with an endocrinologist.
This is from WebMD:
Diabetes can cause problems with eyesight, kidneys, circulation and healing, personally I wouldn’t delay calling a doctor.
Dumb question:
How much salt do you intake, normally? When you’re trying to rehydrate, making sure that you have the right electrolytes and some salt in your system is important to /retaining/ the water . . .
Two points:
One, diabetes insipidus is not a disorder of the adrenal glands as kunilou said. Follow MissSwish’s link for a basic definition. It is also possible that the HIV vaccine could potentially cause DI. DI can be caused by a lack of release of the hormone ADH (central) or resistance to the hormone in the kidney (peripheral).
Two, when one drinks straight water, the kidneys will begin excreting large amounts of dilute urine in about 10 minutes. You are better off drinking something with electolytes (ie Gatorade) or eating something salty at the same time you are drinking water. Do you have any salt cravings in addition to your thirst?
IANAD so first advice when something weird is happening to your body is of course “Go see your doctor”.
I’ll also note that in addition to dehydration it is possible to overhydrate; as Misery and USCDiver noted this can futz with the works.
