Help! I'm going to Cuba

I’m (reluctantly) going to Cuba at the end of March. (Wedding thing, not mine) Does anyone have any travel tips? Some do’s and don’t? Anything? This sounds stupid I know, but what is Cuban currency? The Peso (Mexican) or the US dollar?

With God as my witness, I thought turkey’s could fly.

Just bring American dollars, you can get anything you want with those. Also, bring along some everyday things that are tough to get in Cuba. Soaps, perfumes, & makeup (for the ladies) and razors, aftershave, etc. for the men. These common items are even better then money in Cuba.

Hey Grollman-
Here are a few websites that might help you out! Oh and smoke a cigar for me!

Oooh, Cuba, you lucky dog! I’ve always wanted to go to Cuba - everything I’ve seen about it indicates it is a beautiful country full of lovely, friendly, but somewhat poor and downtrodden people. If you don’t want to go, I volunteer to stand in for you - I have a nice selection of bridesmaid dresses, bound to go with any color scheme. Hell, I’d even get a pageboy bob and wear knickers and carry a pillow.

drollman, where do you live? what’s your nationality? Isn’t it still impossible to get a visa for a U.S. citizen to go to Cuba unless they’re involved in human rights work or whatever?

Wow… A thread that was high-jacked by the OP himself…

Hey, Arnold: I’m Canadian. I know the US has sactions(sp?) against Cuba but I’ve seen photos of many American stars in Cuba including Tom Cruise and his wife and Arnuld Terminator. (I chicken out here, knowing I cannot spell his name) I understand Arnuld enjoys good Cuban cigar and has been a regular visitor to the “taboo island.” (That’s what they called it in a recent People Magazine.)

You simply go to a third country first, such as Jamaica, and go on to Cuba from there. From what I understand, upon entering Cuba, Americans are given the option to have their passports stamped or not. Obviously, its better to not get it stamped. Then you pay a nominal fee for a pass (only given to Americans) that basicly identifies you and when & where you arrived in Cuba. This just basicly replaces the function of your passport since it was never stamped.

Although, I believe that upon re-entry to the U.S. when they ask you if you traveled to any other countries besides your point of departure, you CAN say that you went to Cuba, but you CAN’T tell them that you spent more than $200 there.

Elian?

Judges 14:9 - So [Samson] scraped the honey into his hands and went on, eating as he went. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they ate it; but he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey out of the body of the lion.

I don’t know about Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, but I’m sure Arnold Schwarzenegger has little trouble entering Cuba - what with him being Austrian and all.

Yes, and Nicole Kidman’s an Aussie. Make more sense now?

Frankie: Thanks for the web sites! But I am really looking for anyone who has already been there and can give me some “I experienced it” advice. BTW although I don’t wholly understand the Cuba/US sanctions that have been in place since the 60’s, I’ve been told that an American citizen going to Cuba is like an American citizen going to Russia during thecold war. Is my born-in-Buffalo friend giving me the SD or just some hyperbole?

Well, I believe that there are exceptions made for things such as the wedding you’re attending. I know that you are allowed to depart directly from the U.S. to Cuba is you are visiting family or for humanitarian causes. Otherwise, if you have no particular reason to be there, you have to go through a third country first.

Yes, but she was born in Hawaii, making her a US citizen.

Actually she has dual citizenship, but I think the US government would still consider her subject to the same laws (no-spending-money-in-Cuba) that other US citizens are subject to. Not that these laws are enforced anyway though …
