Help! I've got a virus that's not letting go!

A few years ago, my computer got a virus. OK, I said, so let’s use the antivirus program. Problem was, the virus had gotten to the program already. (Ironic, eh?). So, I reloaded the entire hard drive, but after a few months, the computer began slowing down. It would not shut down properly, and copying and pasting became impossible. So, I reloaded it again. Same problem.

For the last year or so, I’ve had to reload that fracking machine every two months or so, usually after it refuses to work when I need it most. Also, I’ve recently gotten messages saying something like “Message from AAAAA to BBBB: you need this software because you’ve got a virus/spyware/idiot in your computer. Come to our friendly website now!”.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Figure out what virus it is (try typing the message you’re receiving into google if you have no other indication or clue) and usually you can find a fix online. Good luck!

Do you use Ad Aware on a regular basis? It may be that you have spyware, not a virus. You can download it here for free, if you need it: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

Also those “Message from AAAAA to BBBB: you need this software because you’ve got a virus/spyware/idiot in your computer. Come to our friendly website now!” messages are just trying to get you to come to their site to download more spyware.
After you run Ad Aware etc, try looking in your task manager and see if there are any .exe’s that you don’t recognize. Put the name in google, and you can usually find out what they are, and if malicious, how to remove them.
Good luck!

That sounds like Windows Messenger Service. Does the message come in the form of a popup that looks like this example? If so, I suggest you disable that functionality. Instructions are included on that page.

  1. Run both Spybot S&D and Lavasoft Ad-Aware and fix whatever problems they find. Restart your computer and run both programs again.
  2. What lno said about Windows Messenger. Please note that this program is not an instant messanging program, like MSN, Yahoo! or ICQ.
  3. If you’re still having issues, I highly recommend taking your problem to the Net-Integration Help Forums. They’re reallly great at helping remove pesky malware. They’re pretty hardcore about what information you need to post in your OP, though, so read all the directions carefully.

Good luck!

Note: Please download Spybot from the link above or by searching a site such as download.com. Searching Google for the program shows up several web sites that do not provide the program I’m recommending.
