Help me, an aging web developer, plan my next career move

And on the other side of the fence, the same goes for Power BI. Both competent tools and in high demand.

I have a similar background to the OP. After the printing industry modernized and made my job obsolete, I used my prepress skills to move onto Desktop Publishing (fancy term for administrative assistant) and eventually Graphic Design. After I lost my job in the tech crunch of 2008, I took web design and animation classes, but I couldn’t find any graphic design or web programming jobs, mainly because they had become entry level positions and companies would rather hire newborns.

After a few years of little work, I finally landed a temp job doing QA and eventually moved up to eLearning Course Design full time. I still do QA and created our company’s QA wiki. I essentially had to start over from the bottom.

Several people at my workplace essentially created their own positions by showing what they could do with new tech and how it would benefit the company, like the guy who does our 3D and virtual programming. Check if there’s a potential need developing in the tech world that your company can potentially provide, do some research, and make a presentation. I’ve done that a few times. Many of my ideas got rejected, but I eventually struck gold. I read where mobile platforms were outselling PCs, and realized we needed to institute adaptive platforming into our courses to be competitive. I got a check in the win column when I showed them a sample course on a mobile phone I designed with Articulate/Rise.

Have you ever worked as a tech writer? You could try doing tech writing for Salesforce. It sounds like you’re familiar with the documentation and probably have some good critiques / suggestions for how to improve it.
