Help Me Build a Heavy Metal & Hard Rock Playlist!

I’ve got a few Zune points I want to burn, and I’m currently building a Hard Rock & Heavy Metal playlist. Got any suggestions for me? I’d like to stick to stuff from about ~1978 to about ~1995, with an emphasis on mid-80’s hair bands (what can I say? That was popular when I was in high school); although I’m open to other suggestions. Extremely death-y and thrash-y stuff, like Dimmu Borgir, or modern nu-metal [del]crap[/del] stuff like Korn or Tool are out.

To give you an idea of what I like, here’s what I have so far:

Wasted Years by Iron Maiden
Keep 'Em Separated by Offspring
In My Dreams by Dokken
Peace Sells, But Who’s Buying by Megadeth
Dragula by Rob Zombie
Dreams by Van Halen
I’ll Wait by Van Halen
Panama by Van Halen
Let the Bodies Hit the Floor by Drowning Pool
Seek and Destroy by Metallica
Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce
Modern Day Cowboy by Tesla

TIA

Hey, no fair lumping Tool with Korn. I don’t worship them like a lot of people do but they’re about a thousand times more legitimate than fucking Korn.

I notice there’s no Pantera on your list, or is that too heavy? And if you want hair, you need Poison, Motley Crue, and Twisted Sister.

Sorry, my unfamiliarity with the nu-metal scene causes me to lump them together.

I don’t know if Pantera is too heavy or not - I’ve never heard any of their songs. Which ones are emblematic of their sound?

I’m definitely going to get some Crue, Poison and Twisted Sister. Thanks!

Wow, never heard Pantera . . . if you end up liking them, you’re in for a real treat. They’re probably the best metal band of all time IMO. As for one song to recommend – that’s a tough one. They were around for a long time and did some evolving. I guess if one album really exemplifies their sound, it would be Vulgar Display of Power. Try Walk, maybe?

And, just to reiterate, Tool is not nu metal. They were around long before that whole thing happened and sound nothing like them.

Where is the Motorhead??? At the very least, you need Bomber and Ace of Spades.

Back in the late '70s, the term “Hard Rock” referred to bands in the Heart/Aerosmith/Led Zeppelin vein. At the very least (given the 1978 cutoff), I’d add Heart’s “Even it Up” or Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” (if 1977 stuff is ok.)

You could also add Blue Oyster Cult’s “Burnin’ for You”, Godzilla (1977) or “Don’t Fear the Reaper” (1976).

I’m listening to Warrior Soul’s “The Wasteland” as I read this…I’d definitely add them to your list. And I second the need for there to be some Motorhead up there…I’m partial to nearly anything off the 1916 album.

I don’t listen to a lot of metal, but these guys’ last album, called The Chemistry of Common Life, have been ruling my world.

Also, check out The Sword. Epic:

And maybe a dash of High On Fire:

No Judas Priest? AC/DC?

Yeah, you need some Priest. And some BOC.

Electric Eye - Judas Priest
Screaming for Vengence - Judas Priest
Victim of Changes (live version) - Judas Priest
The Wicker Man - Iron Maiden
The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden
Cities on Flame - Blue Oyster Cult
Godzilla - Blue Oyster Cult

Might as well do Invaders by Iron Maiden too.

Machine Head’s debut album, Burn My Eyes, should fit in. Try Davidian, Old, None But My Own or Death Church.

Where’s Ozzy in all this?

I’m too lazy to standardize it or clean up duplicates, but it should get you started.

If you’re open to pop-metal/hard rock, don’t forget Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Scorpions, and perhaps Ratt; that’s what I remember from the 80’s. Oh, and if you really want to go there: Stryper.

For a more “official” list, check out The Essential Music Library: Metal

Wow, thanks for all the replies!

I think Fucking Hostile is probably the best song by which to judge whether you like Pantera.

Tool was only formed three years before Korn, and their first recordings were only a year apart, and they were both huge influences on the nu metal scene.

White Zombie-Welcome to Planet Motherfucker, Electric Head

Alice in Chains-We Die Young, Dam That River, Hate to Feel

Soundgarden-Slaves and Bulldozers

Maybe a little far afield, but:
Nine Inch Nails-Gave Up, Last, Heresy
Moby-several from the Animal Rights album, Say it’s All Mine is the only one I can remember

I know you said no Tool, but at least give this one song a chance:
Tool-Hooker with a Penis

Mostly newer stuff, but some of it has an old school sound…

At the Drive-In - “Catacombs”, “Rolodex Propaganda” (really anything off of Relationship of Commandis good)

Black Mountain - I’m not sure how to describe them exactly; just really, really good. Very retro sound. Try “Don’t Run our Hearts Around”, “Druganaut”, or “Faulty Times” from their self titled album.

Coheed and Cambria - They can do some really good stuff, provided you don’t mind the Geddy Lee-esque vocals. “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3”(the song itself, most of the rest of that album is meh); “The Final Cut” is one of a few good tracks off of Good Apollo…

Dokken - Dream Warriors(trusting yahoo for that link)

Dungen - Ta Det Lungt Not quite metal as it is psychedelic and prog-ish; but could be a nice pace changer. There are some really good riffs in there though; try the title track. I should also note that Gustav Ejstes played every instrument on there; learn Swedish if you want to know the lyrics.

Faith No More - “War Pigs”, or as said a few times in msmith537’s post anything of theirs.

Guns and Roses - Again, almost anything; start on Appetite for Destruction

Murder By Death - Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them. An old west tale of a small town versus a revenge seeking Devil(w/zombies!). Try “Killbot 2000”, “A Masters in…”, “That Crown…”, “Desert’s on Fire”. The samples don’t quite capture the heavier parts. If you ever get the chance to see this band life, do it!..and Sarah Balliet, the cellist?oh.my.gawd.

Prodigy - “Breath”, “Firestarter” off of Fat of the Land

Static X - “Wisconsin Death Trip” (the song; the album is so-so)

The Darkness - Permission to Landis a good send up of Hair Rock.

The Mars Volta - Start with Deloused in the Comatorium, if you like that dive further in; maybe try “Roulette Dares” or “Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt” for more metalish tracks.

The Toadies -Rubberneckis a just a damn good album.

Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Pantera - Cemetary Gates

Forgot about:

The Black Angels-Young Men Dead, The First Vietnamese War, Sniper at the Gates of Heaven

Helmet-anything, especially Milquetoast, Ironhead, Rollo, Exactly What You Wanted

Mastondon-don’t know any titles, but they are pretty hard
