So for some reason I started to sing the chorus of this song to my little boy starting when he was about 6 months old. I never really thought about or recalled any of the other lyrics (the song I think came to mind after playing the second season of The Walking Dead game). I changed the “little girl, little girl” part to “my boy, my boy”, but otherwise the lyrics of the chorus stayed the same.
He’s two now and he’s always asking me to sing: “My boy, my boy”, so I learned the chords for guitar, and went looking for the rest of the lyrics to add some more verses to the song. But, man, the lyrics, as dark as they already were, turn out to be stuff I’d rather not sing to him:
little girl little girl dont lie to me
tell me where did you sleep last night
in the pines in the pines where the sun never shines
we’ll shiver the whole night through
my daddy was a railroad man
killed a mile and a half from here
his head was found in the driver’s wheel
his body was never found
in the pines in the pines where the sun never shines
we’ll shiver the whole night through
you’ve caused me to weep
you’ve caused me to mourn
caused me to lose my home
little girl little girl
where’d you sleep last night
not even your mother knows
in the pines in the pines where the sun never shines
we’ll shiver when the cold winds blow
Now, if finding stuff to rhyme with violets are blue is all it took to come up with some poetic replacement lyrics, I wouldn’t need you guys. So if you’ve got a few minutes to burn and want to give some alternative lyrics a shot, I’d be grateful.
Something relevant to a father/son relationship would be cool!
