Choke, written by Chuck Palahniuk, who wrote Fight Club, which I love. It stars Sam Rockwell, which automatically puts it on my Must-See list anyway.
Miracle at St. Anna, the new Spike Lee joint. I’m intrigued at the thought of Spike Lee’s take on, based on my impressions from the trailer, supernaturalism.
I have free screening passes to both, and they’re both this Monday night. I planned to see both anyway, I’m very happy to pay for either, but which one should I see for free? They’re both based on books, so has anyone read the books?
Thank goodness I don’t have to choose on Wednesday night, when I have a pass for The Duchess. It looks boring as all get out but I’ll see practically anything for free. I hate hate HATE with a major passion the teaser that I’ve now seen about a thousand times (“what we see her wearing tonight I look forward to see you wearing tomorrow”…“Do you think of me when we’re not together?”…“You more than anything” BARF!) but once, one single time, and I go to the movies A LOT folks, I saw a different, longer trailer that made it seem less about a cheating fashion-plate airhead and more about an intelligent, politically-aware woman. It’ll be interesting to see which version is more true.
That’s a tough one. I’ve seen the trailers for both and they both look very good. I’d lean towards Choke more just because I’ve read the book and I like seeing film adaptations of books that I’ve read, though sometimes they leave me very, very disappointed (cough - LORDS OF DISCIPLINE - cough - LEFT OUT HALF OF THE GODDAMN BOOK, ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT PART [MCCLEAN’S PLEBE YEAR] - cough! HAD A WOODEN ONE-DIMENSIONAL HACK PLAY THE LEAD CHARACTER! Cough! Cough!)
I’m a very partial poster. I read Choke. And in fact, my copy is SIGNED by the author, with whom Ii also had my photo taken wearing a bridal veil. I also won a signed rubber squeezy hamburger by answering a trivia question at the book reading/signing. The rubber hamburger has a special place on top of my television set.
So…go see Choke. I think my signed hamburger is as good a reason as any to pick one movie over the other.
Thanks Argent Towers, vetbridge & KnitWit! I wasn’t very clear in my muddled OP. I meant, which would probably be the better movie so that I could choose which to wait and pay for (support financially), rather than see sooner for free. I was leaning toward Spike’s movie to see for free, and Choke to pay for, but now you all have me even more excited for Choke and I want to see it right away!
If I like it a lot, which I probably will, I know I’ll pay to go see it again anyway. I often pay again to see movies I’ve already seen at free screenings. Hell, I saw The Fall first at a free screening, and paid full price 8 more times! That was an unusual case though because the movie turned out to be The One (that one movie of the year which becomes a special favorite). More recently I just paid to see Burn After Reading again after first seeing it at a free screening.
I’d really like to know if Miracle at St. Anna is a religious movie as indicated by the title. I’m all up for supernatural movies (loved The Sixth Sense even though I don’t believe in ghosts, for instance) but it would be nice to know in advance a little bit of what to expect. I don’t want to go looking for info about the film for fear of spoilers. I’m just very curious. It’s not majorly important or anything. No matter what, I’m still happy to financially support Spike Lee. He’s always good.
Decisions, decisions. It’s a few days away. I’ll let you know.
