I have a rather unique sense of humor, and it is hard for me to find movies or TV shows that I find funny. Could anyone please offer some suggestions for viewing based on my list of what I find funny- thanks!
Movies:
This is Spinal Tap
Holy Grail/Life of Brian
Hudsucker Proxy (“44 floors, including the mezzanine”)
Bad Santa
The first Austin Powers
Sexy Beast (specifically Don Logan’s profane rants)
TV
The Office (British version)
Early Simpons/Family Guy, natch
Have you seen a lot of British comedies? Try Spaced or Black Books.
If you like This Is Spinal Tap, I recommend you check out Bad News Tour, which is similar, but (heresy! heresy!) actually better. Everyone involved is actually British, so the bad accents don’t get in the way so much – it’s not so improvisational, so the jokes are a bit more solid, and… they did it first. Rik Mayall is a God. Likewise Ade Edmondson. Nigel Planer is similarly a diety.
Featuring a lot of the same people, you should also check out The Young Ones, which is some of the most brilliant (and surreal) television ever produced.
Also recommended: Harry Enfield’s Television Programme. (Messed up sketch comedy.)
And don’t miss A Bit of Fry and Laurie, which is… indescribable, really. Stephen Fry is the funniest man on the planet, and perfectly matched with Hugh Laurie, who is very nearly the funniest man on the planet. (And after you’ve seen Hugh Laurie in the comic roles that he’s been polishing for over twenty years, you will never see Dr. Gregory House the same way again. Ever.)
Blackadder. Rowan Atkinson, and later on, Hugh Laurie. Season one isn’t even close to 2,3,4. The interim Cavalier episode is good too. The re-hash millenium episode shows clear signs of not having the same writing team.
Look into my eyes. Look into my eyes… look directly at the eyes, not around the eyes, but directly at the eyes, and you’re under… Now listen: There never was a re-hash millenium episode of Blackadder, it never happened, no such project was ever conceived, and three, two, one – you’re back in the room.
Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.
Also, if you like Spinal Tap and the Office, be sure to check out the other Christopher Guest mockumentaries - Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind. Incidentally, Ricky Gervais is going to be in the next Christopher Guest movie.
I’m not sure, but just maybe these:
Movies:
Barbarella
Casino Royale (The 1967 movie, not the made-for-TV movie in 1950-something or the upcoming new one)
Pulp Fiction
Last of the Secret Agents
Death Race 2000
TV:
Dang it, I can not remember the title of the show. I am so ashamed because I loved it. It was on the Sci Fi Channel about the same years as Farscape. Involved an incompetent given charge of this insect-like ship that could project a world-destroying beam. Pursued by the evil government agents who were even more incompetent than our hero. My Google-fu fails me, I’ll have to resort to a question in CS here for the answer. :o
Got the name of the TV show, thanks to ExTank.
It is LEXX.
