Help me find some tribute songs for fathers

That’s the song that immediately came to my mind. It is kind of schmaltzy, but it’s the song I’ve always thought I might want to perform/have played at my own father’s funeral: he and I are both musicians, and though he was never a bandleader he has led various choirs nearly his entire life. No lyrics are ever going to fit someone else’s circumstances precisely – I’m a girl, I haven’t spent my life trying to be like him (quite the opposite, actually), etc. – but the message of being connected to him through music is quite accurate, and some of the lyrics are amazingly appropriate.

That is one of the creepiest songs ever.

My cousin used that song for the father/daughter dance at her wedding. It was very cool, and surprisingly touching.

One of my cousin’s best friends is a great singer, and used a karaoke background to sing to: no one had to worry about bringing in a band for just one song (they had a DJ), and the singer was able to modify the lyrics a little so that they clearly referred to “dad” instead of “boyfriend/husband.” It worked beautifully.

One of the best songs about a dad that I’ve heard is “1432 Franklin Pike Circle Hero” by Bobby Russell. I wish I could tell you where to find it, but I have no idea whether it’s ever been reissued on CD. Almost everything else has, so it must be out there on a compilation somewhere.

“Ordinary Man” by Bill Miller

It’s more about a husband than a father, but I still think it works.

“My Old Man” by Steve Goodman. don’t have a link handy, but it’s out there on the net somewhere. I can barely listen to this one; I always tear up.
Dave Mallett also plays and sings “My Old Man”

This page has a listing of (mostly folk) songs relating to fathers:

That’s disturbing, but not all that surprising. I’ll bet many of them were fairly mainstream pop or top 40-type stuff.

Yes, mostly, because that (and country) are the most requested at high school dances and wedding receptions. I should say, though, in my own defense, that my own tastes are a little more ecclectic.

You have my sympathy.

“The End” by the Doors.
